PATENT QFFroE.
OTTO MATZKE, OF DURANT, MISSISSIPPI.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROCKING-CHAIR FANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,164, dated November 19, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTo MATZKE, of Durant, in the county of Holmes and State of Mississippi, have invented a new. and Improved Rocking-Ohair Fan, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists in the mode of o crating a fan pivoted in an overhanging rockingchair by means of a single lever and cord, as hereinafter described and claimed 5 and it consists mainly in a lever; it also consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front view of the chair with the fan attached. Fig. 2 is a vertical section" of Fig. 1 taken on the line so :0.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Ais the chair. B is the back. 0 represents the seat D, the rockers. E is the fan. F is the fork-support. G is the cord and H, the lever. The fulcrum of the lever is on the center of the rod I, which passes from one rocker to the other. The fork-support F is attached to the back of the chair by screws or bolts, as seen. in the drawing, and curves over the head of the person sitting in the chair. To the ends of the tines or branches of the fork the fan E is attached by pivots at its two upper corners, so that it swings and is easily vibrated on its pivots. The cord G isattached to the pin J in the top of the fan, and after passing through the fork it extends down and is connected with the lever at K. The forward end of the lever H rests upon the floor below the rockers when the chair is in its natural position and the fan is hanging nearly or quite vertical.
\Vhen a person is sitting in the chair and rocks forward the lever will work upon its fulcrum, and its back end will be depressed, which will draw down the cord and throw the fan outward or operate it in one direction. When the fan is thus thrown from the perpendicular the back motion is produced by its own gravity. A rocking motion of the chair is thus made to operate the fan and produce an agitation of the air, which is pleasant and agreeable to the operator.
This apparatus may be attached to any ordinary rocking-chair. The fan may be made rigid or flexible, and of any desired form.
By this mode of applying power to the lever the fan is vibrated by the slightest motion of the chair, and more or less. according to the position of the fulcrum, as the lever-fulcrum may be made adjustable so as to vibrate the fan more or less, as may be desired.
I desire, however, to disclaim a fan overhanging the top of a rocking-chair as any part of my invention. 7
Having thus described my invention, I claim .as new and desire to secure by Letters Pateut The means, substantially as described, for operating a fan pivoted to the overhanging projection F of a rocking-chair, consisting of a single lever, H, pivoted on rod I between rockers, and connected by a cord, G, with pin J of fan, so as to operate in the manner set forth.
OTTO MATZKE.
