Description

SWIVEL COUPLER
THIS INVENTION relates to swimming pool cleaning accessories. In particular, the invention relates to a swivel coupler for connecting a pool vacuum cleaner head operatively to a flexible pool hose end.
A person skilled in the art will appreciate that efficiency of steering operations inherent to submersible surface pool cleaners may be impaired under the influence of twisting and looping of a flexible pool hose connected statically at its associated end to a pool cleaner head. It may be desirable to free the pool cleaner head from or at least reduce the influence of the pool hose on the pool cleaner head.
The invention provides a swivel coupler for connecting a pool cleaning device operatively to a flexible pool hose, which coupler includes: two open ended tubular members arranged in end-to-end axially aligned relationship; a plurality of bearing elements positioned between the tubular members; and a collar member cooperating with the two tubular members to retain them in their end-to-end relationship, the collar member being shaped and sized to define working clearances permitting independent rotation of the tubular members relative to each other and of at least one of the tubular members relative to the collar member about the axis.
The tubular members may be shaped and sized for retro-fitment inline between attachment arrangements associated with a pool cleaner and a flexible pool hose end, respectively.
The tubular members may define between opposed faces thereof an annular bearing race-way in which the bearing elements are positioned.
The two open ended tubular members may each include a generally circular cylindrical body having a flanged end, the cylindrical bodies being arranged in end-to- end relationship axially aligned with their flanged ends facing each other, the facing flanges defining jointly between them the bearing race-way.
Each flange may comprise a uniformly shaped rim extending radially outwardly from the tubular member flush with the associated end of the tubular member, so as to define a major annular flange face, the facing flanges each defining in its major annular face, a circumferentially extending annular recess which is concentric with an axis of the associated tubular member and which is semi-circular in section, so that the recesses define jointly between them the rotary bearing race-way, the bearing elements being contained in the bearing race-way.
The collar member may include a collar body comprising a generally flat annular collar wall having spaced apart retainer protuberances projecting radially inwardly from the wall, the protuberances being spaced apart to define a retainer space between them, the collar cooperating with the tubular members by straddling the facing flanges to retain the tubular members in their end-to-end relationship, the collar member being configured to define working clearances permitting independent rotation of the tubular members relative to each other and relative to the collar member about the rotational axis and inhibiting excessive relative axial movement of the tubular members.
It will be appreciated that a working clearance between adjacent bearing elements is desirous to permit free rolling of the baring elements along the roller bearing race-way without operational hindrance from adjacent bearing elements.
One protuberance may comprise a uniformly shaped rib projecting radially inwardly from a peripheral end edge of the circular collar wall. Another retainer protuberance may include a circumferentially extending elevated generally planar formation projecting radially inwardly from en inside surface of the collar wall. In one embodiment of the invention, the two flanges are held loosely captive between a uniformly shaped rib and an opposing spaced apart elevated planar formation, as described above, the ribs standing proud of the planar formation.
The tubular members may each include an attachment arrangement for retro-fitment inline between attachment arrangements respectively associated with a pool cleaner head water outlet end and a flexible hose water inlet end. The attachment arrangements of the tubular members may include the tubular member being shaped and sized to form a socket-type or nipple-type adaptor for co-operative attachment to a nipple-type or socket-type attachment arrangement at a pool cleaner water outlet end or at a flexible pool hose water intake end as the case may be.
The swivel coupler may be formed entirely from a synthetic plastics, or polymeric material. The tubular members may be formed from a material, at least a major constituent of which is acetal. The bearing elements may be formed from a material, at least a major constituent of which is styrene
The invention further provides a swivel coupler for connecting a pool cleaning device operatively to a flexible pool hose, which coupler includes two open ended tubular members which are arranged end-to-end and are connectable respectively to a pool cleaning device and a flexible hose to connect the device and the hose in flow communication; and a plurality of bearing elements positioned between the tubular members to facilitate relative angular displacement between the members, the bearing elements being formed from a material at least a major constituent of which is styrene.
Each tubular member may be moulded of a synthetic plastics material.
Each tubular member may be formed from a material, at least a major constituent of which is acetal.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic side elevational view of a swivel coupler, in accordance with the invention, as seen along a section taken along a longitudinal axis of rotation;
Figure 2 is a schematic side elevational view of a collar member forming part of the swivel coupler in Figure 1 , as seen along a same section as the swivel connecter in Figure 1 ; and
Figure 3 shows a three-dimensional view of the swivel coupler in Figure 1 , in use, connecting a pool cleaner head operatively to a flexible pool hose. In the drawings, reference numeral 10 generally indicates a swivel coupler, in accordance with the invention, for connecting a pool cleaner 12 (see Figure 3) operatively to a flexible pool hose 14. The swivel coupler 10 includes two open ended tubular members 16, 18 arranged in end-to-end axially aligned relationship, with reference to a longitudinal axis of rotation 20. The tubular members 16,18 each have an annular recess 38, 40, in end faces thereof, which recesses 38, 40 define jointly a rotary bearing race-way 22.
A collar member, generally indicate by reference numeral 24, cooperates with the two tubular members 16, 18 to retain them in their end to end relationship as shown in Figure 1 . The collar member 24 is shaped and sized to define working clearances between the tubular members 16, 18 and the collar member 24, so as to permit independent rotation of the tubular members 16, 18 relative to each other and relative to the collar member 24 about the axis 20.
Further, the two tubular members 16, 18 are shaped and sized for retro- fitment inline between attachment arrangements associated with a commercially available pool cleaner 12 and a flexible pool hose 14, respectively, as explained in more detail below.
In this example embodiment of the invention, the two open ended tubular members 16, 18 each includes a generally circular cylindrical body 30, 32 having a flanged end. The cylindrical bodies 30, 32 are in the form of short pipe-like sections and are arranged in end-to-end relationship axially aligned with their flanged ends facing each other. The facing flanges 34, 36 define jointly between them the rotary bearing race-way 22. Each flange 34, 36 is formed by a rim extending radially outwardly from an associated end edge of the tubular member flush with the associated end edge, each flange 34, 36 defining a major annular flange face. The facing flanges 34, 36 each define in its major annular flange face a circumferentially extending concentric recess 38, 40 which is semi-circular in section, so as to define jointly between them the rotary bearing race-way 22 shaped snugly, to receive a plurality of spherical or ball bearing element 42 of complementary diameter. Moreover, the swivel coupler 10 includes a plurality of ball bearing elements 42 (one of which is shown in Figure 1 of the drawings) arranged contiguously in single file inside the roller bearing race-way 22 defined between the two flanges 34, 36 of the cylindrical bodies 30, 32. Spacing of the ball bearing elements 42 inside the roller bearing race-way is selected so that unobstructed rolling of adjacent ball bearing elements 22 is provided along the roller bearing race way 22.
The collar member 24 includes a generally flat annular collar wall 44 having retainer protuberances 46, 48 projecting radially inwards from the collar wall 44 of the circular collar wall 44. One retainer protuberance 46 comprises an annular rib of uniform cross-section projecting radially inwards from a peripheral edge of the collar wall 44. The other retainer protuberance 48 includes a circumferentially extending elevated formation 48 projecting radially inwardly from an inside surface of the collar wall near an opposite peripheral edge of the collar wall 44. The depth or radial thickness of the formation 48 increases away from the edge of the collar wall 44 to form a sloping surface 49 which facilitates assembly of the coupler 10. In the embodiment of the invention shown (see Figure 1 ), the two flanges 34, 36 are held captive between the spaced apart rib 46 and the elevated formation 48. The protuberances 46, 48 thus cooperate with the tubular members 16, 18 by loosely straddling the flanges 34, 36, thereby to restrict relative axial movement between and retain the tubular members 16, 18 in their end-to-end relationship. The collar body 44 is shaped and sized to allow working clearances between the cylindrical bodies 30, 32 and the collar body 44, thereby to permit independent revolving of the tubular members 16, 18 relative to each other and relative to the collar member 24 about the rotational axis 20. Radially outer opposite edges 50, 52 of the collar body 44 are circumferentially chamfered.
The circular cylindrical bodies 30, 32 are shaped to form a socket-type or nipple-type attachment for cooperative attachment to a complementary shaped commercially available nipple or socket terminations, respectively, which forms part of the pool cleaner attachment arrangement and/or the flexible pool hose attachment arrangement, as the case may be.
The tubular members 30, 32, the collar member 24, and the ball bearing elements 22, are formed from a synthetic plastic material. In this embodiment of the invention, the synthetic plastic material from which the tubular members are formed includes a major ingredient of acetal, and the ball bearing elements are formed from a plastic material which includes a major ingredient of styrene.
In use, if a steering operation of a pool cleaner 12 is to be freed from the influence which a pool hose 14 connected to the pool cleaner 12 may have on it, then a user selects a swivel connecter 10, in accordance with the invention, having tubular members 30, 32 shaped and sized for attachment inline between the respective pool cleaner 12 and pool hose end attachment arrangements 28. In such case, it is envisaged that the steering operation of the pool cleaner 12 is enhanced and that the pool cleaner will extricate itself from areas in the swimming pool where it would otherwise have been prone to get stuck.
The Applicant believes, advantageously, that the swivel coupler 10, in accordance with the invention, provides an efficient way of freeing the pool cleaner 12 from the influence the pool hose 14 to facilitate the steering operation of the pool cleaner 12. Further, the Applicant also believes that the construction and the materials of which the swivel coupler is formed enhances its operation and prolongs the working life of the connector. Further, the Applicant believes that the swivel coupler will be self cleaning and more resistant to jamming than existing swivel couplers.
