Crônicas | Chronicles

"Crônica" vem do grego "Khronica" e que tem sua origem na palavra "Khronos", que significa "Tempo"... Pero vaz de Caminha era o cronista encarregado de registrar tudo o que acontecia durante a viagem marítima de Pedro Álvares Cabral.

Essa ilustração foi criada para uma série de didáticos da Editora Ática. E ainda tem mais ilustrações com o tema "tempo" clicando aqui, aqui e aqui.

"Chronicle" is a word from the greek "Khronica". And "Khronica" comes from "Khronos" which means "Time"... In the XVI Century - at least in Portugal - a Chronicler is also a person whose work consists of writing down everything that happens during sea voyages.

Revolução do Conhecimento | Knowledge Revolution

Um tempo depois de criar a ilustração página-dupla "(R)Evolução do Trabalho", outro didático da Editora Ática pediu um trabalho semelhante: A evolução do registro e da transmissão do conhecimento através do tempo. Apesar de ocupar um espaço menor na página, a nova ilustra emprega o mesmo conceito de linha/túnel do tempo onde vemos a mesma informação - no caso, representada pela figura de um animal - sendo registrada e acessada em diferentes momentos da História da civilização, das cavernas na Pré-História até a Internet hoje.

Some time after I made the double-page illo "(R)Evolution of Work" I was asked to re-visit the theme of "change/evolution/time", this time showing the evolution of how information is kept and transmitted. This new illustration is smaller than the previous one but the same concept of time travel/time tunnel is present: The information - represented by the figure of an animal - being passed along, from the caves in Pre-History to the Internet today. This illo was also created for an educational book from Atica Publishing House.

(R)Evolução do Trabalho | (R)Evolution of Work

Uma nova imagem foi acrescentada ao Portfolio: "(R)Evolução do Trabalho", uma ilustração página dupla criada para abrir um dos capítulos de um livro didático da Editora Ática. Visite a página do meu portfolio e veja a ilustração completa num tamanho maior.

O texto do capítulo - "Tempo e Trabalho" - fala sobre como as profissões evoluiram e se transformaram ao longo dos séculos. Ao avançarmos ao longo da linha do tempo seria possível ver essa transformação acontecendo diante de nossos olhos... E é disso que se trata essa ilustração: Uma linha do tempo onde vemos um grupo de pessoas, cada uma representando uma profissão, vão mudando e evoluíndo, começando na antiguidade até chegar ao presente.

A brand new image was added to my portfolio: "(R)Evolution of Work", a double page spread illustration. It was created to be the opening image for a chapter about History in one of the educational books from Ática House. You can see the complete illo a little more bigger at my portfolio page.


The chapter was titled "Time and Work" and tells us about how professions have evolved since the ancient times. If we could look at people working while traveling through time we could see this evolution... And this is what this illustration is all about: A travel along a timeline where we can see a group of people, each person representing a profession, evolving and changing, starting from antiquity until our own time.





Na página esquerda (acima) tempo a maior parte dos elementos da ilustração (com um espaço para o título do capítulo, no canto superior esquerdo). Cada época é marcada pelas vestimentas, o design dos objetos e a arquitetura... No centro da espiral, pequeno e bem distante, temos o grupo que representa o trabalho durante a antiguidade (Antigo Egito) e ao seguir a linha, passamos pela período do Império Romano (ainda antigo, porém mais moderno que o anterior). Idade Média, Renascença e início do Século XX...

In the page on the left we can see the majority of the elements composing the illustration (with a little space for the chapter title, on the upper left corner). Each moment in time has a distinct feel with different clothes, tools and architecture... In the spiral center, small and far away we see the group representing work in the Ancient Time (Ancient Egypt) and from there we go forward, passing through the Roman Empire, The Middle Ages, Renascence, Early 20th Century until.... 




...até chegar no Presente, que ocupa a maior parte da página direita. As profissões representadas são: Médico, Engenheiro, Cozinheiro/Chef, Fazendeiro e Barbeiro. Escolhi essas porque... Bom, elas existem já faz um bom tempo! Na ilustração podemos ver a evolução tecnológica das ferramentas de trabalho, a inclusão das mulheres no mercado e mais (para os mais atentos)...

...until we reach our Present Time in the page on the right. The professions are: Medic, Engineer, Cook/Chef, Farmer and Barber. I chose to draw them because... Well they all exist since a long, long time! You can notice the evolution of the tools, the inclusion of women and many other things and little details...




E aí está a imagem no layout da página (ainda com o texto de abertura temporário)! Numa escola em algum lugar deve ter um aluno ou aluna girando o livro para olhar de perto cada detalhe... Espero que esteja se divertindo... E aprendendo!

E como bônus - esse post já está bem grande - segue abaixo uma olhada de perto em cada época representada...

And above we can see the illustration and the page layout together (with some temp text)! In a school somewhere I can picture a kid rotating his/her History book and checking the details in the illo... I hope he or she is having fun... And learning a thing or two!
