The style of Socialist Realism originated in the Soviet Union and spread almost throughout Eastern Europe from the 1940s until the end of the 1980s. The paintings depict recurring themes from the socialist working life. Also in Ukraine they shaped the entire cultural scene for decades. Celebrations and technical achievements are depicted, personalities from history and politics are glorified as well as the simple life in the countryside. The artists were mostly financed by the state and trained at the major academies. Their works depict socialism in bright colours and today decorate not schools and public buildings but private collections all over Europe. Museums like to display the works as decorative historical documents of a bygone era.
All the paintings shown in Hamburg come from an Italian private collection that was gathered over years in Ukraine.
