One of the great novelists in English, Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) wrote four masterpieces of modernist fiction between 1925 and 1931. In this reading group, we’ll take a deep dive into Woolf’s greatest and most loved novels: Mrs. Dalloway (1925), a single day novel that contrasts the life of a WWI veteran with that of a society hostess giving a party; To the Lighthouse (1927), which combines a gorgeous elegy to Woolf’s large Victorian family with the story of an artist finding her way; Orlando (1928), a mock-historical novel, covering four hundred years of history in tribute to Vita Sackville-West; and The Waves (1931), Woolf’s most experimental work, which traces the lives of a group of friends from childhood into late middle age.

Anne E. Fernald is the editor of the Cambridge University Press Mrs. Dalloway (2014) and author of Virginia Woolf: Feminism and the Reader (2006) as well as articles and reviews on Woolf and feminist modernism. An editor of The Norton Reader, a widely used anthology of essays, she teaches English and Women’s Studies at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center campus.
