Gasoline saved over the past decade since ending the production of Peykans is estimated to be 4 billion liters, according to an Iranian official.  Peykan's production was ended in 2005. Speaking to IRNA, Kambiz Babapour, head of Vehicle Technology Department in IFCO, said, "The foreign exchange saved was 40 times the amount spent on the project. This is not to mention the environmental benefits accruing from the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants." Babapour noted that 140,000 worn-out taxis were replaced with natural gas-powered ones, 17,000 worn-out diesel buses were substituted by compressed natural-gas powered ones and 65,000 dilapidated trucks of over 10 tons and with a lifespan of 35 years were renovated.  These projects were carried out following the ratification of a bill that seeks to remove obstacles to clean-vehicle production in Iran.
