Em meados do século XX um grupo de jovens artistas plásticos de vanguarda iniciaram um movimento de modernização da azulejaria portuguesa. Nos anos 50 grande número de obras de artistas ceramistas portugueses são associadas a projetos arquitetónicos. Na Fábrica Viúva Lamego, começou a reunir-se um núcleo de artistas ceramistas, que começou por Jorge Barradas e cedo associou Manuel Cargaleiro e Querubim Lapa e posteriormente também Maria Emília Araújo, assinando Mariaújo. Nascida no Porto em 06/08/1940 desenvolve uma rica produção de azulejaria dentro da linha de modernidade dos restantes membros do núcleo da VL. In the 1950s, a large number of works by Portuguese ceramic artists are associated with architectural projects. At the Viúva Lamego Factory, a group of ceramic artists began to gather, starting with Jorge Barradas and soon associating Manuel Cargaleiro and Querubim Lapa and later also Maria Emília Araújo, signing Mariaújo. This article seeks to present an na maior parte da sua inventiva pesquisa nas técnicas de produção azulejar. Este artigo procura apresentar uma análise de algumas obras de Maria Emília Araújo. Estas são vistas como fragmentos de memórias vividas e por ela trabalhadas e adotadas para seus objetivos estéticos. Destacam-se duas grandes vertentes: as suas memórias de vivência como mulher e e a experiência dos países onde viveu, Portugal e Brasil, mas também Venezuela, Curaçau, e a sua paixão pelos trópicos com todo o hibridismo de culturas e artes.
