From the Senior Team

This quote seems particularly apt for a school; even if the school seems the same, in reality it changes each year, and students experience a different school, as they too, grow and develop. 2016 was a year of considerable change. In the Junior School change was most tangible in the continued preparation of the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). Everyone in the community; students, teachers, and parents have played their roles in getting ready for this complex – but rewarding initiative. In October the School was evaluated as to our readiness to implement the full programme and, after the school year had ended in December 2016, we received the news that we had been unconditionally authorised to offer the PYP from March 2017. In the Senior School the now famous “double generation” journeyed through 4YL – and the attendant IGCSE examinations. Much of the second half of 2016 was taken up with planning for the final two years of the “double generation” - and particularly their entrance into the IB Diploma Programme. The Senior Leadership team also underwent change in 2016. In August, Iara Lindemann, the Head of Senior, left The British Schools. At the end of the year an emotional farewell was bid to Raquel Filippini, who retired after 25 years of dedicated service to the Schools. Whilst Raquel’s encyclopaedic knowledge of the community will be missed, we give a very warm welcome to Andrea Píriz - the new Administrator of The British Schools. External examination results – a vitally important measure for the School – were generally satisfactory in 2016. All 99 Form 6 students sitting the “Egreso” examination in December 2016, passed and will enter the Senior School in March 2017. IB results, whilst by no means outstanding, were better than expected. IGCSE examinations, sat by the “double generation” in 4YL were excellent - a wonderful rebuttal to the mediocre results the same generation obtained in their 3YL year. Another measure of education is in the range, quality and participation in extra- and co-curricular activities. Noteworthy amongst these are: • The St. Andrew’s Society of the River Plate Essay Competition is a longstanding rite of The British Schools. 2016 once more yielded very pleasing results – with students excelling in several categories. A first, second and third place in the Elementary category going to Sofía Civetta, Francesca Ferrari and Mateo Pilorget respectively. In addition, Abril Alexander was awarded first place in the Junior category. • For the third successive year the School played host to the THIMUN Latin American

Conference – drawing students from across South America interested in debate and in current affairs. Similarly, in early 2016 a delegation from the School travelled to The Hague - to participate in the original THIMUN Conference. • Theatre – and particularly musicals- has become an area of real strength and depth; something the community takes pride in. In 2016 the Junior School mounted the exuberant “Shrek” and the Senior School offered the “edgy” and thoroughly wonderful “Chicago”. • Sports are hugely important for very many students and parents. Participation rates have never been higher – particularly in the “traditional” sports of hockey, rugby and football. On any weekday after school upwards of 200 students are regularly training, practicing and playing matches. Handball has also solidified its place in the range of team sports offered by the School. Karate and tennis continue to thrive as individual sports – and sporting excellence is evidenced in the sporadic news the School receives of achievements in individual sports outside of School. At the end of an SLT report on School activities it is especially nice to be able to report on the very nice, positive, demanding yet caring atmosphere that has sustained the School throughout 2016.

The intention behind the content of the following pages is to capture the ‘School Spirit’ and institutional memory both lived and experienced throughout 2016. This student-centred publication is brought to you with thanks to the many contributions by the School community who created content and provided photographs. The aim is to include as many of the exciting, challenging, and celebrational moments that took place during the academic year, as possible. However, as it often is with best laid plans... it is entirely possible that not all have been reflected here. The idea behind the fun and colourful graphic design of this latest edition is based upon the magic of the watercolour painting technique. The beauty and uniqueness of watercolour lies within its properties, each containing characteristics not found in any other painting medium. We hope that you will enjoy leafing through this 2016 edition and sharing in some of the reflections about learning and life at The British Schools as much as we enjoyed creating it. The Junior Prefects 2016 exhibited many of the attributes of the Learner Profile as they avidly engaged in a variety of activities to support the School-wide community, proved themselves to be excellent role

models for their peers and adopted the role of a caring “big brother or sister” to the younger generations. Their enthusiastic contributions in different aspects of School life were invaluable, as was their obvious commitment to remain true to the School Motto “Perfice” - Be thorough.

Prefects are an integral part of The British School’s tradition and identity. Their role is a position of responsibility within the School-wide community. Elected students are expected to be exemplary role models for all students, demonstrate excellent leadership skills, respect others, be supportive and caring, responsible and fair, and possess a strong sense of School Spirit. We thank the 2016 Senior Prefects for their excellent service and solid commitment.

In Kinder, we encourage children to become Inquirers. They show their curiosity and like to find out about new things. The journey through Kinder took children on many great adventures as they engaged in a variety of stimulating Units of Inquiry. They had fun exploring diverse natural environments: an Hornero´s nest, a walk in the School´s grounds, an outing to the Botanic Gardens, and a visit to the School´s Labs, all provided interesting hands-on opportunities to make new discoveries. Children made observations, recordings and comparisons and shared their findings. These are all research skills that they will continue to develop throughout their lives.

Workshop

During 2016, the Junior School continued to offer PYP workshops for parents. An overview of the PYP was discussed, as well as the approaches to teaching and learning supporting the programme. This helped

to

establish

consistency

in the language between parents and School and to inquiry into the approaches used in the process of teaching and learning across Junior. It was great to see the parents’ enthusiasm

and

motivation

for

finding out more about how students learn. We invite parents to join us next year in this ongoing process to become more familiar with the PYP.

Mediation and Peer Mediation Conflict is as much part of life as is the air we breathe. At times life can feel difficult because of it. But if we can learn from these situations of conflict and change them into growing and learning experiences, we will be acquiring life-strategies. The answer lies in our attitude towards conflict. Win/win solutions to conflict can be negotiated. In Form 5, during the first term, we worked with each class group on how to handle conflict, teaching the basic skills of Peer Mediation. After this, those willing to become Peer Mediators continued training, one lunch-time a week. When the training was complete, in pairs, and using a yellow arm-band to identify them, the Peer Mediators went out into the playgrounds to help peers solve their problems. This is done during part of lunch-time so the fact that they give up part of their free time is much appreciated. We have been working with this programme for more than fifteen years. Kim Mac Lennan En Form 6, junto al gran trabajo realizado por los docentes a lo largo de todo el año, tenemos instancias donde se discuten puntualmente los pensamientos y sentimientos que ciertos acontecimientos les provocan. Buscamos que los alumnos además de estar preparados desde el aspecto cognitivo, puedan desarrollar estrategias de afrontamiento ante una situación de evaluación que lógicamente produce estrés. Apuntamos a que los alumnos puedan desarrollar confianza en sí mismos para esta instancia y para el futuro. Tener una visión positiva de sus posibilidades y de logro ante las metas que se establezcan es fundamental. Como parte del trabajo realizamos ejercicios de relajación muscular y de visualización. Hace varios años que Kim Mac Lennan lleva a cabo dichas instancias. También se invitó a Nuria Sanguinetti con dos objetivos: manejo del estrés previo al Egreso y para que los alumnos se pongan en contacto con una profesora de Secundaria que trabaja en esta línea en Senior. Se trabajó pensamiento positivo, estiramientos, ejercicios de respiración y relajación. Estas experiencias se continúan en Secundaria, en espacio SMAC (Stress management/ AttentionConcentration).

Individuals and The different courses in Humanities directly contribute to fulfilling the Mission Statement of the School, as well as the attributes of the IB Learner Profile, as they help students to develop the ability to think in a critical manner, construct coherent arguments and learn to take a personal and independent position on the most diverse affairs. The various subjects promote an ethical, empathetic and open-minded approach to the different issues encountered to foster international understanding and a respect for different cultures, along with their problems, aspirations and struggles - economic, social and political, religious, technological and cultural.

IS BOVINE MEAT A NECESSARY GOOD FOR CAN INTROSPECTION BE DEEMED AS A VALUABLE AND EFFECTIVE WAY TO KNOW URUGUAYANS? By Bruno Sablich OURSELVES? By Natalie Figueredo “Uruguay has traditionally been a country that consumed a lot of bovine meat, taking into account its population of 3 million people. In recent years we have observed changes in this behaviour that are reflected in the different patterns of consumption. This fact woke up an interest to investigate: Is bovine meat a necessary good for Uruguayans? It can also be concluded that bovine meat does not have a clear relationship with the other types of meat, as they do not always behave as substitute goods. Specifically relating the consumption of meat to the income variables and so to the income elasticity of demand, we can conclude that bovine meat is not a necessary good for Uruguayans�.

The human being can be considered to be an adventurous, naive spirit, infinitely attempting to escape oblivion while exploring the realities of existence. As finite creatures with limited knowledge, we are constantly finding ourselves placed in experiences that are unknown and seemingly incomprehensible. These commence the desperate search for explanations to serene our uneasy states caused by not understanding the reality that surrounds us. This courageous yet innocent spirit haunts us throughout our existence and comes to light each time a response is necessary to continue living serenely. The knowledge we obtain from answering our questions provides harmony to our beings, as something that was troubling our minds is now suppressed. But which is the source of this balance? Does it lie within us? Or is it something external to ourselves?


Uber has been affected both positively and negatively by numerous external factors. Uber found an opportunity in both poor service offered by the taxi monopoly and the lack of flexible jobs. The Uruguayan market´s increasing use of e-money was in line with Uber’s charging policies and the increase in smartphone usage was a factor that facilitated the company’s connection with local people. Finally, Uruguay´s outdated laws allowed the company to quickly enter and grow the business before any legal or political resistance could be organised.

“IS APPLE PROTECTING ITS BRAND IMAGE RATHER THAN THE PRIVACY OF ITS CUSTOMERS IN DEALING WITH THE FBI’S CONTROVERSY?” By Josefina Álvarez Is Apple really protecting its customer’s private information or is it a strategy to generate a positive brand image? The fact that the company is engaged in a highly complex situation, one in which the right or wrong answer is not easy to measure, was a very interesting topic to research. Looking at it from a certain point of view makes it different from the rest where information had been illegally stolen from companies by hackers that trespassed their cyber security systems. But in this situation, the FBI – the agency that protects society from cybercrime - is the one who wants Apple to provide access to the private information of every customer they have ever had.

“WHICH EXTERNAL FACTORS HAVE PLAYED A KEY ROLE IN UBER’S ENTRANCE INTO THE URUGUAYAN MARKET?” by Agustín Etcheverry

Learning Beyond the Classroom Inquiry is at the heart of the IB Geography course. This year the students undertook an investigation into Montevideo’s Old City. This field work activity gave the students an opportunity to evaluate the changing urban morphology of the Old City and the role of tourism. Primary data collection is an essential component of this course and one example of how this was achieved is when the students carried out questionnaires with tourists. They were fortunate as there was a cruise ship with German tourists in the port. Locals were also interviewed as the students investigated their opinions about the changes to the environment and the increased presence of tourists in the Old City.

“TO WHAT EXTENT WAS THE POLICY OF GENOCIDE IN RELATION TO THE JEWISH POPULATION OF GERMANY AND GERMAN OCCUPIED EUROPE THE PRODUCT OF A PREDETERMINED PLAN WHICH PRECEDED THE 1942 WANNSEE CONFERENCE?” By Pablo Pereira. The investigation consisted on a study of Nazi policy towards Jews, with three main divisions: policy towards Jews from the Nazis arrival to power (1933) to the Wannsee Conference (January 1942), the Wannsee Conference itself, and policy in the conference’s aftermath, until the end of the war. I concluded that Nazi policy towards Jews was composed of two key 13

Modern Visita a la Biblioteca Alianza Francesa En mayo los alumnos de 2° año de Francés realizaron una visita a la Biblioteca de la Alianza Francesa para continuar el trabajo con revistas iniciado en la Library. En esta visita los alumnos realizaron un trabajo de investigación y búsqueda de información utilizando la gran variedad de material de la biblioteca: libros, revistas, álbumes, CD audio, films y archivos informáticos. En mai les élèves de 2ème année ont fait une visite à la Bibliothèque de la Alliance Française pour suivre un travail commencé à la Library. Pendant cette visite les élèves ont fait un travail de recherche en utilisant le vaste matériel de la bibliothèque: des livres, des magazines, des CD audio, des films ainsi que des archives informatiques. Petit déjeuner en cours de Français Les élèves de 2ème année ont pris un délicieux petit déjeuner français. Ils ont goûté des plats préparés en petits groupes avec des recettes qu´ils ont cherchées à la bibliothèque sur les magazines “Astrapi” et qu´ils ont travaillées en classe. “Petit déjeuner” en clase de Francés Los alumnos de 2° año tomaron un delicioso desayuno francés. Degustaron platos preparados en pequeños grupos con recetas que buscaron en biblioteca en las revistas “Astrapi” y que se trabajaron en clase. Visita a la Biblioteca Promoviendo el perfil indagador, los alumnos de 3° año concurrieron a la Biblioteca para seleccionar un artículo sobre un tema que les llamara la atención sobre el cual debieron completar una ficha y hacer un resumen para luego transmitirlo a sus compañeros. Visita à Biblioteca Promovendo o perfil pesquisador, os alunos de Terceiro Ano foram à biblioteca para selecionar um artigo a respeito de um tema que lhes chamasse a atenção, sobre o qual tiveram de preencher uma ficha e fazer um resumo, para depois transmiti-lo aos seus colegas.

Chino En agosto tuvo lugar en el Junior Hall de TBS la competencia “Puente hacia China” en la que participaron varios alumnos del Colegio. La misma consistía en dos partes: 1- Discurso 2- Talento artístico El desafío era ir más allá de los conocimientos adquiridos, preparando un discurso que debía ser recitado de memoria, con todas las dificultades que implican lo fonético y articulación de ideas en una exposición. Además esto implicaba asumir la exigencia de exponerse ante un jurado que los evaluaba, así como la ampliación de los conocimientos que se poseían de la cultura china, lo cual tiene mucho que ver con el perfil de Inquirer, que implica ir más allá de lo dado. Dos de estos alumnos estuvieron entre los cuatro primeros puestos y tuvieron la oportunidad de viajar a China para competir junto a jóvenes de más de 80 países. El resultado fue una experiencia intercultural vivencial profunda y emotiva. En China experimentaron una cultura diametralmente diferente, lo cual contribuye a enriquecer su “learner profile”. Vieron la estructuración de un aula china. Vieron una familia china, participando de actividades culinarias “en familia”. Visitaron íconos clásicos de la cultura china como la Muralla China, la Ciudad Prohibida y también vieron osos pandas.

Almuerzos Siendo la comida parte de la cultura de los pueblos y de la identidad de una lengua y en el contexto de Internacionalismo que promueve el Programa IB, se realizaron en el Colegio cuatro almuerzos representando a Grecia, Brasil, China y Francia, todo con la colaboración de María Inés Garbino y GCG.

Junior It´s been ten years since we opened this incredible Library! In 2006, during the months of April and May, an amazing group of seventeen volunteer mothers came to barcode and enter our whole collection onto the computerised library system. They came and worked alone or in groups and when that was done, they started putting all of the books into boxes in order to move the Library upstairs during the July holidays. On Monday 14th August 2006, Mrs. Terra, Mrs. Wirgman, Mrs. Ferber, Mrs. Martino and some volunteer mothers arrived VERY early in the morning in order to take down all the papers from the doors, hang up balloons and ribbons and turn all the lights on. When teachers and students started coming upstairs (the upstairs corridor was then used by Form 5s, Lowers and Uppers) they had a big surprise! Throughout these ten years different people have come to work with us and left their personal imprint, generations of students have enjoyed this facility (to think that students that were in Prep in 2006, are now in 3rd Year Liceo!), different activities have been organised (Book Tasting, Author of the Month, Puppets), authors and storytellers came to talk to the students (Roy Berocay, Helen Velando, Magdalena Helguera, Sebastián Pedrozo, Federico Ivanier, Daniel Baldi, Verónica Leite, María José Riffaud, Niré Collazo), and special events have been planned for the whole school (Mysterious Characters, Treasure Hunts, Grandparents Days, Book Exhibitions). We are now moving into a new way of using this facility but we still feel that there are lots of exciting things that can and will happen in the Junior School Library!

Visual Lucía Yordi “The texture of memories” Wool, wire, and paper on canvas 30x30 cm 30x30 cm This diptych represents the present time and faded past, presented as a consecutive event. The bicycle acts as a representation of childhood. Firstly a bicycle shape lined with red wool symbolising the present time followed by the same shape this time covered up with cream-coloured wool slightly showing the shape as if the object was being covered or buried up by time, fading away, remaining only the texture of that memory. Milagros Algorta REALITY Wood, iron and mirror 76x45x45cm Commonly associated to Pinocchio for its long nose, my sculpture symbolises the experience of facing reality and the unknown. There is a contrast between the inside space of the cage, which suggests a safe comfort zone; and the infinite outer space which suggests reality. The growing nose represents the passage from the inside to the outside, and how this generates feelings of fear and anxiety, expressed by the strikingly opened eyes and mouth.

Olivia Zerbino Interwoven I & II 60 x 45 cm & 60 x 45 cm Polaroid Photographs, Red Wool on black Canvas. This work showcases the women that have marked me and made me the person I am today. They are stitched into the canvas each with their own ‘code’ taken from gypsy culture, symbolising their destiny, and consequently their own singularity. This work represents time, nurture, love, and the certain violence and pain that goes hand in hand with change, shown by the forceful action of stitching.

The Monkey’s

The theatre company “Tongue in Cheek Productions” visited our School on the 17th May to perform their version of W. W. Jacob’s “The Monkey’s Paw”. The White’s household took over the Auditorium and transported the Year 1, 2 and 3 students to that cold night in which the supernatural story took place. For nearly two hours, they suspended their disbelief and allowed themselves to be taken over by the theatrical experience. This wonderful event was prepared beforehand with all the aforementioned groups during the English lessons to arouse interest, create anticipation, and ensure that all the students would be able to fully appreciate it, regardless of the differences in their development as language learners. The stellar performances, a riveting plot and a cliffhanger ending contextualised and led the way to activities aimed at deepening students’ understanding of drama, fostering their creativity, opening their minds, and promoting their love for theatre.

Viaje educativo a la ciudad de Buenos Aires, “Buenos Aires Cultural trip”, coordinado por las asignaturas de Historia del Arte, Arte y Comunicación Visual 1, Visuals Art (IB ART), y Theatre, a través del Departamento de Artes y Comunicación Visual del Senior School.

El propósito del viaje es vivenciar Buenos Aires desde una perspectiva cultural, dada la gran oferta de posibilidades que nos ofrece esta ciudad en lo que a arte y cultura respecta. Visitamos los museos más importantes de la ciudad, lugares históricos, exposiciones y asistimos al espectáculo “Fuerza Bruta”, expresión teatral no convencional de gran interés para nuestros alumnos del Bachillerato de Arte y Expresión, así como a un espectáculo teatral convencional en la Avenida Corrientes. Es una experiencia única que tienen los estudiantes de 5° año para desarrollar el conocimiento y enriquecer su formación de un modo vivencial para luego trabajar en las diversas asignaturas todo el año. Este viaje es una parte fundamental dentro del proceso formativo para los alumnos que cursan Visual Arts o Theatre en IB. 22

Reserva Uruguay, ejemplo de biodiversidad.

Los alumnos de 4to año visitaron un área protegida privada en el departamento de Maldonado: Reserva Indígena. Este espacio cuenta con tres biomas característicos del Uruguay: pradera, humedal y monte. Rodeando esta Reserva se encuentra la Sierra de las Ánimas y la costa rioplatense. Recorriendo estos paisajes naturales los alumnos vivenciaron las interacciones entre la flora y la fauna autóctona. Recabaron información e incorporaron conceptos y conocimientos que les permitieron reflexionar sobre el valor de los biomas y el respeto que debemos de tenerles para preservarlos.

As part of the Coding Unit, Form 3 students are introduced to Logo. Logo teaches the basics of programming in a step by step format. When they learn to program, children understand and tinker with the digital world they inhabit. “Students know that in IT we think carefully, we make decisions and we are problem solvers. Being thinkers is one of the attributes of the IB Learner Profile. Thinkers are defined in the following way: they exercise initiative in applying thinking skills critically and creatively to recognise and approach complex problems and make reasoned, ethical decisions.” - Tech Transformation “Critical thinking implies being curious, asking questions, connecting with others, taking an objective approach and looking for alternative perspectives. It also implies the ability to reflect on what you are learning, not just to accept what you read or hear but to question the validity of what you discover, taking into account the attitudes of those who have created the information. Eventually, our hope is that students grow in confidence and that they are able to form opinions based on their experiences. Everyone has ideas. Only a select few can make them happen. Maths Train your brain Preparation for the national and international competitions began in February at “Centro Educativo Los Pinos”.

As a result, many students took part in the “Olimpíada Matemática de Casavalle” with some outstanding performances.

The Maths Olympics delegation from The British Schools participated in the International Mathematics Kangaroo Tournament held in April, followed by the Iberoamerican Youth Mathematical Olympiad in May.

Finally, the 14 students selected as part of the National Maths Olympics Delegation, went to “Liceo Elbio Fernández” in October to compete in the National Final Maths Olympics. Our medal winning student, Marcelo Pérez, travelled to Buenos Aires where he represented Uruguay, alongside other Uruguayan medallists.

In June the Maths Department carried out a problem solving activity in order to incorporate more students into the Maths Olympics Project.

We want to share with you the experience of the 1st Year Liceo 2016 students through photos and extracts of their reflections. Question: What was your experience when working with Robots? Answers: “It was a very good experience because we could do something different. We learned what a robot is, about different types of robots and sensors, and what each one of them is for. We also saw how to program the robot by using “Lego Mindstorms Education Programme” and what each block was for and how to make it work. We also realised the importance of robots for the future, because we have really advanced in a technological aspect and we have to take advantage of it. This can make people´s work easier, for example, a doctor who needs to carry out an operation can use the Da Vinci robot, which helps the doctor to operate. In conclusion, I had a lot of fun programming with friends and I would like to continue doing these types of fun exercises.” “Robots make me see another side to programming. It is totally different than the Scratch or Logo programs where you program an animation - with robots you are programming in the physical world, you are making an object move by programming an action that the robot will perform.” “It was very interesting, since I believe Robotics is the future. Why? Well I believe humans have created many useful creations in the past, after all didn’t we humans create fire or electricity or even theories that would change our whole perspective of the world? The answer is yes. Yes we have and we should acknowledge that we are capable of much more, a very good example of this is Robotics. Isn’t it fascinating that throughout 30

the advanced technology of the present we can create robots that perform surgery (Da Vinci), or industrially programmed robots that perform a variety of programmed tasks in production sites, or even robots that disarm bombs!” “I find that all good and interesting things come with challenge, strangely I didn’t have major challenges. Through teamwork it was easier, but on occasions it was complex. Through trial and error we solved the issues and if we struggled we called for the teacher’s guidance.” Question: When programming with robots, with which Learner Profile attribute do you feel more identified with? Answers: “I feel identified with the Communicator attribute because I communicate with the robot through a program.” “I feel identified with Risk Taker because I had to try lots of times to get what I wanted. And I made mistakes but I tried again.” “In this project I felt more identified with being a Risk Taker because I had to try many things that I didn’t know if they were going to work.” “I identified myself more with the Inquirer attribute because I had to make many inquiries in order to understand the things and to improve my knowledge.” “I felt more Knowledgeable because we had to ask questions and a Thinker because we had to remember the combination of blocks.” “I consider myself identified as a Thinker, because when programming with robots I feel the need to work out a solution, for the improvement of the subject.”

Communicating through The Arts are integral to the Primary Years Programme. They are a powerful mode of communication through which students explore and construct a sense of self and develop an understanding of the world around them. Students very much appreciated Malu’s visit during this Unit of Inquiry. Through a variety of experiences they were stimulated to think and to articulate their thoughts in new ways. We recognise the Arts as a medium of inquiry which provides opportunities to grow as good communicators.

Drama is great for students´ language acquisition, it helps them improve their communication skills and perfect their performance, whilst allowing them to express themselves in many modalities. Form 1 students created their own short plays based on 4 inspirational stories: “The Elves and the Shoemaker” (being grateful) “The Little Red Rooster” (sharing and being generous) “The Mouse and the Elephant” (“what comes around, goes around”) “The Ugly Duckling” (everyone is special in their own way) Through this experience the children were able to demonstrate many attributes of the Learner Profile.

Un día como cualquier otro, con miedo a la soledad, considerando las implicancias de ser mujer en ese contexto, se propone de pronto a cruzar un puente para ir de un lado al otro de la aldea y cae… Al despertarse se encuentra en una habitación sola, donde, si puede escapar o no será lo que determinará su destino…

Concurso: Cuento Digital Premio Itaú Es un concurso organizado por la Fundación Itaú de Argentina, Uruguay y Paraguay junto al Grupo Alejandría y Rumbo Sur, donde adolescentes de entre 13 y 18 años participan, en pequeños grupos o individualmente, creando lo que se llama un “cuento digital”. El tema del cuento era de elección del autor, y debía ser inédito en medios impresos y visuales. Pero, ¿qué es un cuento digital? Son cuentos que se crean utilizando la tecnología y otros recursos como videos, fotos y audios de modo de relatar una historia. El plazo para entregar el cuento fue hasta el 5 de setiembre de 2016. Los ganadores del concurso fueron escogidos por un Comité de Lectura que pre-seleccionó 29 cuentos finalistas entre más de 400 participantes. El Jurado de Premiación evaluó esos cuentos finalistas y eligió a los 10 ganadores los que fueron premiados. El objetivo de este concurso es la “Relación entre la literatura y las nuevas tecnologías”. Desde el Colegio participó y fue seleccionada como una de las ganadoras la alumna Delfina Collazo. Descripción del cuento y fragmentos relevantes: El cuento fue relatado en la perspectiva de una niña refugiada de 11 años, que sin sus padres, y junto a su pequeño hermanito de 4 años, debe luchar por sobrevivir. Su país está en ruinas, en una constante guerra, donde pensar en el mañana es un desafío diario. 36

“Y luego, ¿qué sería de mí? Me iban a desechar como si fuera una basura, al igual que hacen con mil inocentes niñas. No iba a permitir eso. En el nombre de todas esas niñas que han sido maltratadas, golpeadas y sometidas a situaciones de violencia, que van en contra de los derechos que tenemos los seres humanos, necesitaba escapar de ese lugar...” “De pronto, vi una flor azul, extraña, la cual me parecía conocida. Y sabía dónde crecía...” “…cuando llegué a donde se supone que debería estar mi casa, no estaba. Era muy extraño, estaba segura que allí era mi casa. La falta de energía pudo hacer que me haya imaginado algunas cosas que no estaban realmente allí...” “Todo era puro silencio, no había ni una voz o alma viviente...” “Mis ojos parecían dos nubes cargadas de lágrimas al ver el rostro de un pequeño asustado acercándose hacia mí...” Reflexión. Para concluir, el concurso fue una instancia muy creativa para poder hallar una relación entre la “literatura con las nuevas tecnologías”. A medida que pasa el tiempo la tecnología está constantemente avanzando, y a veces como consecuencia ya los libros en papel no se utilizan. Por este motivo este concurso fue esencial para demostrar que puede haber una “conexión” entre la literatura y la tecnología. Además, este concurso de algún modo está integrando lo que sería la “literatura tradicional” en el nuevo mundo rígido por las nuevas tecnologías. Delfina Collazo

At the heart of The British Schools, the Model United Nations Club provides a great opportunity to communicate for and against a multitude of different ways of thinking, acting, interacting and living together. Whether it be about threats to Heritage Sites, volatile food prices or legal frameworks for the protection of journalists, we strive to get our point of view across as clearly as possible in our after-school practice sessions. Then, once we are in the conference room, faced with MUN enthusiasts from neighbouring schools and others from further afield, we can exchange views on current global issues with MUNers of all age groups.

The 5th year IB candidates (about 100) were divided into small groups of no more than four students and they were asked to come up with an original research question related to some aspect of the selected topic.

First, each group had to decide which investigation they were going to carry out and then, they were given sufficient time to acquire the necessary background information. Then they were allotted two full working days, where they could make use of all the school´s laboratory facilities. Students and teachers worked together in the School labs. It turned out to be a great opportunity for both carrying out the investigation and improving the social interaction between students and teachers.

A few days later, when all these investigations were finished, all the students and the Science staff met for a final presentation. Each team prepared an exhibit consisting of posters, photographs and a stand showing the results of their practical work. All the Senior School and some of the younger students were invited to visit the exhibit.

Green In 2015, the students of Form 4M conducted an inquiry whereby they researched the damage styrofoam trays and cups do to our environment. They realised that within the School grounds thousands of these were used and disposed of every year. After reflecting on their learning, students took action and wrote a persuasive letter to the School community asking for their support in reducing the amount of trays and cups being used by the school canteen. As a result, GCG (the School’s catering company) started to use cling film to wrap and sell food. Eight representatives from 4M in 2015, were invited to the Green Summit which was being held at St. Hilda’s School, Buenos Aires. The students travelled with Mrs. Michelini and Mr. Potts to Argentina where they stayed with host families. These eight representatives took further action from their learning by communicating their initiative to groups of children from different schools around Argentina. They then listened to the fantastic initiatives that were being conducted by these other schools. The students had a fantastic time and proved to be excellent representatives of The British Schools. This really shows that learning is not just fixed to the classroom. In Prep, children continued developing their sense of justice, fairness and honesty as they grew into becoming principled individuals. Students faced daily challenges in which they were motivated to help each other in finding the right thing to do. En esta competición se buscó promover y estimular la práctica y el estudio de la correcta ortografía, así como aumentar el nivel de competencia léxica de los estudiantes. El alumno Lars Heijne fue el ganador y representó a The British Schools en la instancia final del concurso, en el que participaron varios colegios de Montevideo.

St. Andrew’s Essay

Each year, students from The British Schools participate in the essay writing competition organised by the St. Andrew’s Society of the River Plate. Founded in 1888, the St. Andrew’s Society of the River Plate is a non-profit organisation that raises funds for charitable causes through the promotion and preservation of Scottish cultural activities and traditions. Every year, students enjoy the possibility of expanding their comprehension of the cultural background to the English language and gauging their essay writing talent against students of the same age from other schools in the region. It is a very interesting activity as well as a means to encourage students to pursue high academic standards in creative writing. Students from The British Schools have been the proud recipients of many winning prizes and honourable mentions over the last few years. Congratulations to our 2016 winners! Para que la formación de nuestros alumnos sea amplia y rica, se llevan adelante diversas formas de contribuir a su proceso educativo. Una de las propuestas para los alumnos de 5to año, es el curso de líderes. Durante las diversas instancias que lo componen, los alumnos que conforman el equipo de líderes van adquiriendo y desarrollando diversas herramientas para el trabajo con alumnos y el liderazgo. De este modo, los alumnos potencian habilidades personales complementándolas con herramientas que van sumando gracias a esta experiencia. A través de talleres de formación, el equipo de líderes se va preparando para dos de las experiencias en las que trabajan fuertemente y cuyo aporte es fundamental. Ambas actividades son: We´ve got Talent y la salida a Paso Severino. En ambas oportunidades la contribución de los líderes en la parte organizativa y recreativa son claves para el éxito de dichos eventos. Nos sentimos muy orgullosos del equipo que se forma año a año y agradecemos mucho a los alumnos, que a través de su responsabilidad, compromiso y alegría ejercieron este rol durante el 2016. --Cada año el Colegio despide a una de sus generaciones, que luego de una intensa formación llega a esta etapa de culminación. Para este fin de año, el equipo pastoral organizó una tarde de cierre junto a alumnos, profesores y directores. En un clima de alegría todos disfrutaron de la interacción entre pares y alumnos. Junior Form 6 Repeating the successful experience of 2015, our Form 6 Camp was held at the beginning of the year. We are delighted with this new format, which enables our students not only to forge stronger bonds among themselves but also with the staff as they understand the importance of balancing different aspects of their lives—intellectual, physical, and emotional—to achieve well-being for themselves and others. We believe that The Camp prepares them for a very challenging year ahead, giving them solid tools to face the Egreso Exam; the first sporting exchange trip abroad visiting a school in Buenos Aires and the community project with Caif “La Esperanza”. Camping at “Campamento Artigas” allows students to immerse themselves in a wonderful natural setting, undergoing teamwork-fostering activities. The concept of “thinking of others” and “putting oneself in someone else’s shoes” is strongly promoted through fun games and adventure. True friendship and partnerships cement whilst sharing unforgettable memories. “Campamento Artigas” is an event that will remain deeply engraved in everybody’s hearts!

Mate & People and places are interconnected through traditions. Form 2 students had fun sampling the Uruguayan tradition of drinking mate and the British tradition of drinking tea. As students developed their research skills, their inquiries enabled them to draw conclusions regarding common values existing between different cultures and how cultures can be connected through their traditions. An awareness of the differences between an individual and ‘the other’ is crucial for a positive interaction amongst cultures, helping students become open-minded as they grow and develop in Junior School.

The Roald Dahl

On the occasion of the centennial of Roald Dahl’s birth, Year 1 students organised a film festival to celebrate the life and legacy of the prolific British writer. Within the context of the English Department Library Project, students read a selection of Roald Dahl’s short stories and took on the challenge of creating their own film adaptations. This task involved acquiring a deep understanding of the source material, integrating language skills in authentic communicative settings, developing online collaborative project-management skills through the use of ICT, and applying their interpersonal, teamwork and leadership skills. In a period of ten weeks, students studied the stories, planned and created the films, trailers, posters and backstage interviews, promoted the Roald Dahl Film Festival within the School community, and arranged its celebration during the week of the 13th of September to coincide with Roald Dahl’s birthday. In a delightful turn of events, on the 14th of September this experience was crowned by HRH Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, who honoured us with his presence during the screening of the films and interacted with the students, sharing his appreciation of the author’s celebrated work.

The British School’s MUN club, being student-led, is open to the opinion and considerations of all School students. Model United Nations is undoubtedly an open-minded society due to the fact that, while representing a variety of nations from across the globe, one always learns about the political and economic posture of certain countries regarding current world issues. These are instances in which we are given the opportunity to understand in greater depth the importance and influence of countries’ power, politics, culture and social perspective on a worldwide scale. This year, at local and international conferences, The British Schools’ students represented the UK, USA, Malaysia, Israel, France, China, New Zealand, Venezuela, Afghanistan, Germany, Portugal, Argentina, Russia, Japan, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Angola, Senegal, Colombia and Sao Tome & Principe! Thus we have had the pleasure of sharing and acknowledging the way of life and opinions of students from across our continent and beyond. These are always moments to discover, discuss and welcome previously unknown realities with a potpourri of students who all share at least one common interest: MUN.

2016 will remain deeply engraved upon the memories not only of all members of The British Schools and the Old Boys & Old Girls Club community, but of the whole country. A year marked by the terrible events which occurred in Dolores early in April, caused by the onslaught of a devastating tornado. Events which moved our whole community profoundly, generating an incredible chain of action by students, teachers, parents and alumni. Here we have tried to capture, in photographs, some of the sentiments of the campaign:

The urgency of the plea put the machinery to work: boxes were needed, boxes magically turned up within a day, thanks to a chain of communications set off by the Form Parents. Volunteer parents dedicated a morning to tape those boxes up in time to receive the contributions of personal hygiene kits that the children were bringing to School and which culminated in the ‘Spiral’ celebration. Contributions continued to flow, from TV sets to audio equipment, from books to blankets and towels. The School also provided furniture to help refurbish the schools in Dolores. A chain of students loaded the goods in a truck kindly offered by a School family.

Students and staff from Senior visited Dolores to take materials and share time with the people who had been affected. They soon learned that students in Dolores had no safe buildings for their lessons: our next target was to get a container for the Escuela N° 64 in

“Altos de Dolores”. A mammoth Bake Sale and Whole School Non-Uniform Day helped to raise the necessary funds and, as The British Schools and Old Boys & Old Girls Club community came together as one, the target was achieved. Denise Danrée, Junior Pastoral Coordinator shares her experience: “With the car absolutely filled to its maximum capacity, the long journey began. Mrs Carina Bazzurro, our contact in Dolores, was there to meet us and to kindly act as our escort. Our first stop was Escuela No. 2, where students from the Escuela N° 64 had been temporarily housed. Escuela No. 64 was directly in the path of the tornado, suffering terrible consequences. The students, approximately 50 in number, were having lunch when we arrived. It was a great opportunity to have a chat with them and to meet their teachers. The Head of Escuela N° 64, Mrs Marta Cerqui, told the children we were there representing The British Schools and the Old Boys and Old Girls Club and it was surprising to see their reaction. They immediately recognised the name of the school, and you could observe their great appreciation for the help they had received. They mentioned the wonderful personal hygiene kits, the books, school materials and the container – but above all, they valued the letters and encouraging messages sent by the students and members of the community. Next stop was a visit to Escuela No. 64 accompanied by the Headteacher, Carina, and two students, Santiago and Camila. As we approached the site in “Altos de Dolores”, we were amazed at the damage the tornado had caused – although the debris had already been cleared, you could see a wide strip of land where buildings had once stood - and lots and lots of construction underway. There were heaps of sand and gravel in front of most homes, cement mixing machines, blocks and bricks everywhere. Escuela N° 64 was on a hill and the first glimpse showed three white containers, dazzling in the morning sun. Two of them, big enough to house 1st - 4th years (approximately 20 students) and 5th & 6th year (approximately 25 students) were provided by the authorities. The third container, donated by The British Schools and Old Boys & Old Girls Club originally thought to serve as a Library and Media Centre, will initially become the Kindergarten classroom where 8 children will learn. We went around the old school buildings and although they were still standing, the tornado had caused severe damage to their whole structure, making them unfit for use unless

properly repaired. Another building, which will be used as a dining room facility - and which did not suffer so badly - was being repaired by workmen who were getting it ready for after the winter holidays. It was then time to unload all of the materials which we had brought in the car: • • • • • • • • • • •

1 plasma TV 38” 1 DVD player 2 big bookshelves 2 smaller plastic shelves with drawers 3 posters 2 big carpets smaller carpets foam puzzle for the floor lots and lots of cushions 4 puff seats books and lots of educational and board games for a wide range of ages.

Once we had finished setting everything up everyone was in awe! Santiago and Camila exclaimed in delight: “It is wonderful… and it is all new!” We all hugged and took lots of photos to remember this very special moment, the children proudly holding the plaque which will be placed in the container. Just before our final farewells, Marta, the Headteacher gave us a small token – a symbol of their appreciation - a pin bearing the words “Si, se puede”. For all of us who lived the campaign together, this message will leave a deep imprint on our hearts. A truly unforgettable experience.

Salidas Promover en nuestros alumnos el ser buenos comunicadores, expresarse con confianza y creatividad, colaborar eficazmente y escuchar los puntos de vista de otras personas y o grupos es un objetivo prioritario para el Departamento de Humanidades. Son muchas las tareas y actividades que se llevan a cabo para alcanzar esta meta tan significativa, pero dentro de las mismas destacamos las salidas didácticas ya que por su naturaleza, implican un aprendizaje distinto a la instancia diaria de aula. Dichas salidas suponen una herramienta metodológica vivencial y cognitiva en un entorno diferente al habitual, reforzando los aprendizajes significativos desplegando habilidades y actitudes novedosas en nuestros estudiantes que contribuyen de forma positiva en su formación. A través de las mismas nuestros alumnos adquieren el conocimiento por diversos caminos, dado que se intercambian opiniones, mantienen conversaciones, escuchan y leen. Asimismo, obtienen, comparten y comunican estados de ánimo, sentimientos, vivencias y emociones a través del lenguaje oral. El objetivo de dichas actividades es formar alumnos sensibles hacia las diferencias y la diversidad en el mundo, capaces de responder a la necesidad de los demás, que puedan imaginarse la situación de los otros, a fin de comprender sus pensamientos, razonamientos y emociones para lograr tener una mentalidad abierta y una actitud reflexiva sobre las perspectivas de otras personas. Por todo esto podemos afirmar que las salidas didácticas en el marco de nuestro departamento son una verdadera oportunidad de ver el real funcionamiento de los jóvenes trabajando en equipo colaborativamente y para demostrar su capacidad como comunicadores al mismo tiempo en que tanto los adultos como los jóvenes disfrutamos de una instancia de aprendizaje. ---

Paso Sabemos que el cuidado hacia nuestros estudiantes encierra un significado amplio. A través de diferentes actividades buscamos brindar experiencias de enriquecimiento a nuestros alumnos a lo largo de su proceso de formación en The British Schools. Cada una de ellas aporta un ingrediente destacado y único, se trata de potenciar al máximo las diversas formas de contribuir al camino que recorren nuestros alumnos. Al finalizar el año, realizamos con los alumnos de primer año, la salida a Paso Severino. Allí el equipo de líderes, los chicos y varios de sus profesores disfrutaron de una hermosa jornada de juegos, interacción e integración, fomentando el sentimiento de pertenencia, la colaboración y la convivencia armónica. Cada una de estas experiencias es, en su justa medida y en armonía con otros aspectos, uno de los momentos donde la amistad, el compañerismo y el cuidado hacia los alumnos se ven reflejados.

The Olympic Games celebrated in 2016 offered the perfect setting for “risk-takers� to be one of the main attributes incorporated across the curriculum. Mr Harley, a very special member of our community honoured us with a series of visits - he related how he had taken risks, persevered and finally suceeded in his dream of bearing the Olympic Torch in representation of Uruguay. The Olympic Games represented a solid opportunity for Junior students to be encouraged to be more adventurous in their learning. Students are constantly growing and propelling themselves further to achieve more. They are actively challenging themselves to develop their talents to the best of their abilities. This event enhanced our sense of community.

This year, Form 3, 4 and 5 students performed the musical “Shrek Jr�. Once again, they surprised and delighted audiences by showing lots of respect and tolerance towards each other. They also showed their capacity to take risks and be creative in representing characters, singing their songs and performing their dances. The students’ on-stage enthusiasm reflected the hard work and commitment applied during the three months of rehearsals. The students strived to reach their best and to develop their talents, and were a great example for the entire School Community.

Information Technology in a Global Society (ITGS) classes are aligned with the attributes of the IB Learner Profile. One attribute that the students worked on was Risk Takers. On a trip to the Escuela Naval, the students were inspired to explore innovative strategies by challenging their ways of thinking and encouraging them to be confident when making decisions. The students were able to interact with a computer naval simulation. They were exposed to different scenarios where the outcome would directly depend upon the decisions made. Under this simulation exercise students developing their skills to be risk takers. a process that required them to leave comfort zone and become confident in choices and actions taken.

Form & Community The main objective of the Form Period is to use this space for the education of values. A wide variety of different activities are carried out in order to encourage the acquisition of values that the School seeks to promote. Different organisations visited the School and worked with the students, sharing their interesting presentations and workshops (for example ÂŤProyecto ShoĂĄÂť). This year, the students participated in different social action projects, helping institutions like hospitals and schools in different contexts such as: CAIF del Lago, CAIF Creando Lazos, and Hospital Pereira Rossell, among others. In the case of Year 4, the emphasis on community projects was even greater, transforming the students into real risks takers. They came into contact with a completely different reality, trying to promote a change no matter how big or small it might be. The students carried out these activities with both commitment and empathy, opening their hearts to some life changing experiences.

A lively combination of Fitness, Fair Play, and Fun were the ingredients putting a smile on the faces of children, families, and staff gathered together on the School fields for the annual Junior Sports Day. The supporting “whoops” and “cheers” gave the students an added boost as they pitched their skills to earn points for their respective Houses. To add to these displays of healthy competition, two Form 6 students from each House went head-to-head for the Junior Champion Cup. One girl and one boy were selected from each House to compete in the 800m, 100m, Long Jump, High Jump, and Shot Putt. House Points were awarded for each event. These points accumulated and the girl and boy who finished with the most points received the Junior Champion Cup.

IB IB Andes fue una experiencia única e inolvidable por la cual vamos a estar agradecidas todas nuestras vidas. Sabemos que mucha gente deja de ir por tener una idea equivocada sobre lo que es este viaje, pensando que van a estar todo el tiempo escalando montañas cuando en realidad no es así. Podemos decir por experiencia propia que los momentos en los que se escala la montaña son muy pocos y muy distintos a lo que uno cree.

Subir la Cordillera de los Andes, dormir dos noches ahí, mirar las estrellas en la montaña, ver estrellas fugaces, ver el amanecer y el atardecer en la cordillera, vivir una experiencia con personas con síndrome Down y otras personas ciegas, estar dentro de una nube, aprender a armar una mochila tipo “mochilero”, cocinar con amigas y amigos en la cordillera: cada momento fue único y especial y acompañado por reflexiones.

Cuando estábamos en el avión no sabíamos ni qué imaginar; algunas de nosotras ni siquiera habíamos viajado a Chile por lo cual era todo muy raro. Debemos aceptar que llegamos un poco con la mente cerrada en tema sociabilizar ya que nos daba mucha pereza tener que hablar otros idiomas con lo cual íbamos pensando: “bueno vamos a terminar siendo muy amigas entre nosotras, pero no más que eso.” Fuimos las últimas en llegar con lo cual los cuartos estaban mayoritariamente ocupados, por lo que íbamos a tener que dividirnos, y aunque terminamos durmiendo casi todas juntas, tuvimos la suerte de ya hacernos amigas de otras chicas. La primera cena ya estábamos comiendo con ellas, riéndonos a carcajadas. Y así fue como comenzó nuestra experiencia IB Andes.

Al paso de varios días terminamos formando una gran relación con gente que nunca hubiéramos imaginado, al nivel de llegar y ya pensar en cómo decirle a nuestros padres que NECESITÁBAMOS ir a visitar a nuestros amigos argentinos, y ya reservando las fechas en que ellos vienen en verano para no perdernos de ningún programa y poder disfrutar al máximo el tiempo en que ellos estén acá. Nos encantaría que todos entiendan que IB ANDES sí es para gente como tú, como nosotras, como todos. No se necesita ser un experto en nada porque justamente es ahí donde aprendes lo que necesitas. “Morís de hambre”, mentira. Completamente mentira. Esto fue lo que más escuchamos antes de ir y podemos confirmar que no es así. Es más, ¡Estábamos asustadas! ¡No sabemos cocinar!

Otro de los problemas que nos planteamos: “No tengo ni la mitad de las cosas que se necesita llevar”, pero lo conseguimos prestado de gente que viajó en años anteriores o gente que tuvo experiencias similares así que eso tampoco es una excusa. Obviamente hay que llevar abrigo, vas a la Cordillera de los Andes, pero vale la pena pasar un poco de frío y vivir tal experiencia. Para nosotras cada momento fue único y especial. Incluso la primera noche que dormimos en la montaña en carpas, que en medio de la noche nos dimos cuenta que en realidad estábamos todas despiertas porque algunas tenían frio, otras estaban muy incómodas y otras con necesidad de ir al baño, esa noche fue distinta pero inolvidable. Nos levantamos todas juntas, fuimos al baño, comimos algo y nos quedamos charlando en la carpa a las carcajadas mientras calentábamos el cuerpo y la carpa haciendo “calor humano”. No solo volvimos a casa con el diploma IB Andes, las 24 horas de CAS y las 8 horas de ToK. Puedo jurar que volvimos a casa con las mentes cambiadas. Hicimos amigos para toda la vida, vivimos una experiencia imponente, con la mente llena de imágenes imborrables, y una libretita llena de frases dichas a lo largo del curso que nos tocaron el corazón. Damos las gracias a todas las personas que hicieron este viaje posible.

“Olympic Games” was chosen unanimously as the main topic for 2016 Interhouse Day. Students and House Teachers worked together to organise this memorable celebration. The fields were covered with balanced “athletes” who competed and gave their best for their Houses. The “House Banners Competition” was changed for a “Stands Competition”. Students and teachers had great fun performing an animated representation of the chosen topic (Olympic Games). Mr. Roy Harley was invited by Princes and Cuff, where he represented the Olympic Spirit while carrying the real Olympic Torch. Queens and Jones represented the Past and the Present of the Olympic Games, Alexia Calfopoulos was a Greek woman and Manuel Leindekar embodied a modern athlete. Kings and Blount decided to cherish that instance with a song that transmitted their profound House spirit. Joy, creativity, imagination, companionship and a real sense of belonging permeated this fabulous annual School celebration enjoyed by students teachers and staff.

CAS Another year, another GLA session Another year, another GLA session. Same building, same place - beautiful British Columbia, but different people. This is what I experienced this year, the Global Leadership Academy once again opened its doors for me to take another summer course. I always believed that even though one can be a really good student, good grades are not the only thing needed. Solidarity, commitment, persistence, leadership, all of these play a very relevant role. All these powerful words represent a very important part of my life now, one that I have been inculcating throughout my two years attending this academy. This amazing two week long programme has taught me how to become a balanced student and the importance of serving others in need.

Not only did I fall in love with the course but also with the place: Victoria, British Columbia. I got so much inspiration and encouragement. Confidence grew inside me and I got to dream big and actually succeed because if you have a passion and a clear purpose you can create a great change in the world. InĂŠs Moran

I have no words to describe how I felt the moment I crossed the door of Brookes Shawnigan Lake School again. Many memories came back, but many more were built during those two weeks. Being part of the GLA family is one of the most amazing things ever. They provide scholarships and opportunities to students from all over the world and this year it was my case. A chance to come up with a great community service idea was served for anyone wanting to attend the course with a full paid tuition and airfare. The encouragement from the staff members of the programme was incredible from the moment I showed interest in coming up with an idea, and this is how I got to go this year, by winning the contest because they believed in me and in my idea. This is the most important thing I have experienced so far, the fact that they put all their trust and energy in us just because they believe youth is powerful is totally unbelievable, and I am so grateful for being part of this community which welcomed me since day one.

Fundación During the Unit of Inquiry ‘Sharing the Planet’, Form 4 students inquired into peace and conflict resolution. They researched the causes of conflict, how it can change people’s lives and reflected on the responsibility we all have towards society and the environment. The visit to Fundación Don Pedro provided students with very valuable learning experiences, observing how organisations within societies assist in instilling values for peaceful co-existence.

Global Young Leaders “When I think about the IB Learner Profile attributes, ‘Balance’ is the first one that comes to my mind. As individuals, we must learn and understand the importance of making a balance of things in our daily life so as to achieve the wellbeing of others as well as our own. In order to achieve our own wellbeing, we must learn how to be interdependent. I personally learned this skill in the Global Young Leaders Conference. In this Conference, which took place in the United States, you learn how to grow and how to coexist with other individuals from completely distinct cultures and countries, which is a great challenge since there were no ‘comfort zones´, and coexisting with people who are totally different is not an easy task. Moreover, being in another country, without your parents, with people you barely know, brings new responsibilities, mutual respect, independence, confidence and a new global perspective, skills which are essential for future leaders”. Escritores En el mes de abril nos visitó Gabriela Mirza, escritora uruguaya de la novela “Tomasa”, ganadora del concurso de Literatura Infantil y Juvenil 2012, promovido por Mosca Hnos. y Editorial Sigmar. Esta novela fue trabajada en Idioma Español con alumnos de segundo año. ---

El 27 de octubre los alumnos de tercer año recibieron al escritor uruguayo Henry Trujillo. Los estudiantes elaboraron en clase una entrevista para el escritor en la que se lo interrogaba sobre el proceso creativo de sus libros, cómo influye su experiencia y condición de sociólogo a la hora de escribir así como el abordaje de preguntas específicas sobre la obra “Torquator”. Durante la entrevista los alumnos evidenciaron destrezas comunicativas con su interlocutor, reformulando las respuestas cuando correspondía y generando un intercambio ameno y fluido. Al finalizar la entrevista, los alumnos se acercaron al escritor para mostrarles las producciones realizadas a lo largo del año, en base a la nouvelle ya mencionada. Dichos trabajos consistían en representaciones gráficas, ya sea en formato de cómic o fotonovela, de cada uno de los capítulos que componen la nouvelle. El escritor se vio muy conmovido por las producciones de los alumnos, lo que hizo sumamente gratificante la actividad.

Senior All students must know not only how to read and understand writing, but also how to write using a citation style. When writing a research paper, lab report, or any other type of academic assignment, students use resources (such as books, articles and websites) written by other people to support their argument. However, when using someone else’s information, credit must be given to the author(s) to avoid plagiarism. There are many different formats for providing credit, the School is currently using APA (American Psychological Association) citation style. APA citation style classes are given to students in order to help them properly credit the information they use.

The world of information is changing rapidly, there is a digital revolution and a library evolution. Now libraries are more Centres of Resources for Learning, and have as their main aim the development of curious, respectful and reflective people as global citizens. In this sense some changes have been implemented on the Senior Library’s webpage that allows access to trustable sources of information to help students need to develop good quality research papers. There is also a wide range of recommended online resources including databases, portals, digital magazines, and more‌

The year 2016 marked 100 years since the birth of Roald Dahl. In this framework, the English Department promoted a film festival amongst Year 1 in order to join in the worldwide celebrations. Students and teachers worked a lot on this author reflecting on his life and work. Senior Library is proud of having been part of this festival, providing space and material for the whole process and the prize giving ceremony. Lights, camera, action!!!

Los 39 El día 4 de octubre realizamos una salida didáctica al teatro “El Galpón” con la generación de quinto año para compartir la representación de “Los 39 escalones”, drama inspirado en la obra homónima de Alfred Hitchcock. Esta actividad se desarrolló en el marco del curso Literatura y Cine, que conforma el primer semestre del Programa de Diploma de la asignatura Spanish, con el fin de que los estudiantes reflexionaran acerca de las correspondencias que existen entre las expresiones artísticas del Cine, el Teatro y la Literatura. Después de la representación, se realizó un teatro forum con los estudiantes para compartir su experiencia como espectadores. Este tipo de actividades pone a los alumnos ante sí y los cuestiona sobre sus cualidades como seres críticos que evalúan la realidad que se presenta ante sus ojos.

Farewells

RAQUEL FILIPPINI - Administration Raquel Filippini retired from The British Schools at the end of 2016 following 25 years of dedicated commitment. In these years she has seen the school change and grow – above all grow! If all has been change in those 25 years, it has been against the backdrop of the financial and administrative stability that Raquel gifted to the School. Moreover, in the course of all of those years Raquel acquired an encyclopedic knowledge of and understanding of the school community. As a restless soul, “retirement” will entail a host of activities and interests. We wish Raquel the very best in this much deserved next stage of life.

ELAINE RADCLIFFE – Administration Elaine Radcliffe sadly opted for work based in the UK at the end of 2016. She leaves behind a legacy of structured communications and procedures which allow the school to work efficiently in a bilingual milieu. Elaine joined the School in 2008 – and has been involved in all of the School’s initiatives since: Website, CIS accreditation, IB evaluation, PYP authorisation, THIMUN and many more. She brought to the school a “perfect” English accent, a wonderful ability to adapt to the many and various needs of the school and an excellent sense of humour.

JACKIE ARCHER - Junior We are all sad to be saying goodbye to Mrs. Jackie Guridi. Jackie will be taking time away from School to be closer to her loved ones. Jackie started her journey here at The British Schools when she worked in the Infant Library. After 6 months in the Library, Jackie was asked to take over a class for a teacher on Maternity leave and she hasn’t looked back since – many generations of Form 4 and more recently Form 3 students have benefitted from her being their teacher. Jackie will be terribly missed, not only for her excellent teaching qualities, but for her positive attitude, her warm nature and her contagious laughter.

MACARENA OTTONELLO – Junior Macarena Ottonello first joined The British Schools as a student. She rejoined the Schools in 2001 filling in for the Senior School secretary who had left on a temporary basis. She then moved into teaching, starting her journey as a Teaching Assistant. After three years, she entered the Art Department, where she has been able to touch the hearts of many generations of children inspiring their creativity. She is an excellent team player and her contributions and wonderful ideas will be greatly missed by all!

Patricia Fillippelli - Junior Mrs. Patricia Filippelli (or Patricia Gaminara) has been an active member of The British Schools for 52 years, first as a student, then as a parent and as a teacher. Starting as a Teaching Assistant back in 1980, she has taught at practically all levels: Prep, Form 2, Form 3, Form 4, Form 5 and recently she has been teaching Form 6. A wealth of experience! But her strength was not only her expertise within the class… her warm and caring nature made each one of her students a special person, allowing them to bloom and reach the sky under her wing. A great companion, always lending a helping hand to those in need, understanding and generous. She is a true upholder of the School´s traditions. It will be strange not to see her organising the parade for her house, Queens, on Sports Day.

MAGDALENA PÉREZ DEL CASTILLO – Junior Magdalena Pérez del Castillo or “Cuqui”, as she is known by all, started as a student at the School. She joined the Junior School staff in 1998 as a Teaching Assistant, then becoming a Form Teacher for 5 years, mainly working with Preps and Form 1. She proved to be an excellent practitioner as well as a very caring and warm teacher. Cuqui continued her studies whilst she worked, obtaining her degree as a “Psicopedagoga”. She became part of the Learning Support Team, and 3 years ago took on the role of Learning Support Coordinator. Under Cuqui’s leadership, the Learning Support Department has become an outstanding aid to the teaching and learning within the Junior School. Cuqui has not only been extremely effective in her role, but she has been an invaluable support, a most caring and loyal friend and companion and an example to all, being a true embodiment of the Learner Profile attributes.

MAGDALENA REYES - Senior Magdalena dedicated 14 years to The British Schools. Her passion for Philosophy inspired her students by engaging them in the reflection of humankind’s fundamental questions. Magdalena’s expertise in the subject helped students develop their critical thinking skills. We wish her well in her new professional enterprise.

CRISTINA MIRABALLES - Senior Cristina taught for 8 years at The British Schools. Her profound knowledge of Literature and commitment towards teaching were pillars for students to strive to reach their full potential. We wish Cristina the very best in her retirement.

ELEONORA REBOLLO – PE Eleonora Rebollo es una de esas entrenadoras que acompañan, dan consejos, educan, corrigen, refuerzan, atienden, dan afecto y se preocupan por sus alumnas. Una entrenadora que con su actitud, pasión y honestidad para decir las cosas, hacía ver todo de una manera más simple. Gracias por todos estos años compartidos y por las experiencias transmitidas.
