Halloween 2022: Learn about festival's history and originsAgencies
With autumn setting in, the nights come on quickly and are certainly darker than how they were back in summer, setting the mood for a fantastic Halloween. The tradition is rooted in Celtic culture, and it includes far more than pumpkins, fancy dress costumes for the dead, and horror films.

The gist of why we celebrate Halloween, its roots, and everything else one needs to know are discussed here. In the past, people wore masks during Halloween to ward off spirits and prevent ghosts from recognising them. Originally, turnips were used for carving out Jack O’Lanterns until recently, when the pumpkin took place.
The traditional Celtic festival of Samhain was a pagan celebration that marked the end of summer and the start of the cold winter. The Celts inhabited current areas of Ireland and would light fires and wear special dresses to disperse ghosts.

Some people do not agree with this festival in Ireland but say it is Parentalia, a part of ancient Rome where the people paid homage to the dead. Wearing costumes and lighting fires terrified the ghosts, or they would destroy the crops.

Halloween is taken from the word "All Hallows Eve", which is the evening before All Hallows Day or (All Saints Day) or November 1. Hence, December 3 is celebrated as Halloween. The poem "Halloween" is from Scotland. It was written by Robert Burns in 1785.
