What is Cupuacu?
Cupuacu (pronounced coop-wa-SOO) is a tree native to the Amazon rainforest in northern Brazil, and it gives large, oblong-shaped fruits with a hard outer shell of a rich brown color. The fruit is about the size of a medium-sized melon and it contains grape-sized, round, brown seeds. Cupuacu Butter is made from the pressing and grinding of these seeds. Cupuacu is related to the Cacao tree (cocoa beans) and can loosely be translated to “food for the gods.”
Cupuacu butter is light, creamy and soft and is rich in phytosterols and fatty acids. It possesses excellent moisturizing properties and contains at least nine antioxidants including vitamin A and C.
What is Cupuacu Butter used for?
Cupuacu butter has been used to treat dry, damaged skin: its polyphenols combat free radicals in the tissues, and its fatty acids protect and moisturize. Apart from healing, it improves the skin’s moisture barrier, it improves elasticity, and acts as an anti-inflammatory agent — it’s been used to treat skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis.
Cupuacu Butter is a better moisturizing agent than lanolin or shea butter, as it attracts 240% more water, making it a more effective skin hydrator. Cupuacu Butter also absorbs damaging UVA / UVB rays for natural sun protection.
