Who are the artists and what do they do?

The artists I chose to talk about this week are Meghan Shimek and Cornelia Konrads.

Meghan Shimek is an artist that works with weaving and structural forms. Her woven sculptures are dynamic with patterns and textures. Shimek uses space to transform her work. In the work titled Incarnadine, Shimek uses the color red to express emotions and the perception of the ideas of femininity and socio-political unrest. Each weaving allows for different types of emotions to emerge from the viewer and overall, has a calming feeling due to the softness.

Cornelia Konrads is an artist that plays with gravity, nature, and space. Konrad’s work makes natural things appear to be floating in space. The pieces of work are set in a natural space where they are found and creates a moment to appreciate. The sculpture itself interacts with the setting it is placed in and creates a stronger experience for viewers.

How can these artists be compared or contrasted?

I think both artists use the concept of space and surroundings very well. In Shimek’s work, she uses the gallery space and spreads her weavings around the entire room. This can allow for the viewers to move around and interact with the pieces. Konrad’s work also uses space and setting, but is more intriguing to me because the objects that are used are things that we are familiar with and know how they appear in the world. The way that the pieces are floating gives us a new type of experience with something that we knew of and were familiarized with.
