Earlier this week, I listened to the new song released by the group, The Chainsmokers. This song is called “Sick Boy” and has a deeper meaning than listeners may think. If you take the time to closely listen to the song’s lyrics, you can hear that it is discussing the issues with our society today.

When you click play, the very first lyrics will hit you hard and make you think. The first lyrics are, “I’m from the East Side of America, where we choose pride over character”. These words just seemed so real because the world is changing and people are beginning to not care about character. The song goes on to say “I live on the west side of America, where they spin lies into fairy dust”. I think that they are talking about the media and how they can turn twist people’s words and make people believe lies and make everything seem wonderful.

Another issue the song discusses is narcissism in the world and how “everyone projects and expects you to listen to ‘em”. These were are so powerful because some people today don’t know how to listen, they only think about how they will respond next to prove you wrong. I think that the words of the chorus are the most significant. It repeats, “how many likes is my life worth?” To me, this is what the song is all about. It is the message that the world needs to get off the phone, stop staring at screens, and realize that your worth is not determined by how many likes you get on an Instagram post.

More artists are beginning to write songs about things happening in the real world to raise awareness to what has become the norm. We need to realize that there is so much more to life than how fake you are behind the camera and that everything is not about you. Our society has lost morals and values and it’s time that we start doing kind things for one another and being thankful for what we have.
