Baseball Drops Game One of Series to No. 7 Tennessee

3/22/2024 | Baseball

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – No. 17 Ole Miss opened its series at Rocky Top under a rainy night sky as it fell to No. 7 Tennessee on Friday night, 13-5.

Will Furniss led the Rebels, going two-for-two at the plate with two doubles for the first time in his career. Brayden Randle also had a good night at the plate, securing his first career home run.

Dealing with less desirable conditions of rain coming in and out, Gunnar Dennis put together a perfect first inning with two strikeouts to open his sixth start of the season.

That would be the only inning in which he did not give up a run, however as the Volunteers put up nine hits, four being home runs, to bring in 10 runs over the next three innings.

Will Furniss picked up Ole Miss' first hit of the night in the third inning, doubling a long ball to left field.

Furniss furthered his streak with another double to right field in the fifth before Brayden Randle followed up with his first-career home run to put the Rebels on the board.
Jackson Ross led off for Ole Miss in this sixth and reached first on a fielding error on the Tennessee third baseman. After capitalizing on a wild pitch and reaching second, Luke Hill sent a fielder's choice to the shortstop position and brought home Ross to make it 10-3.

The Volunteers put up five more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and closed out the Rebels in the seventh to secure the run rule victory.
