That price would make the 250 GTO the world’s most expensive automobile. The record previously belonged to a 1962 250 GTO, which in 2012 sold privately for a reported $35 million.
Lauren’s car, chassis number 3987GT, earned a victory in the first race it entered, the 1962 Paris 1,000 Kilometers, and then won its next three races with Roger Penske driving. The following year, it placed in the top 10 in every race that it entered.
