Where the footsteps of queens and the homes of sultans collide with the rippling seas and impressive mountains, there lies a town that captures the spirit of Turkey in its many forms, past and present.
It’s a city that has long been loved by visitors because of its amazing scenery and its intriguing stories, with streets trod by citizens of history’s great societies.
And while you can certainly get a good feel for history as you explore, you’ll also find some of the hippest restaurants, bars, shows, and clubs in the region – plus lots of excellent spots for younger travelers to cut loose!
Without further ado, let’s dive into (or climb towards, or walk around) the amazing things to do in Alanya!
1 – Mosey around Alanya Castle
This is the perfect place to begin exploring the city – after all, it’s pretty hard to miss!
A stunning 13th-century relic, Alanya Castle (Kalesi) sweeps across the cliffs around town, with a commanding view of the ocean and the surrounding area.
Like the many structures that came before it, the fortress was designed as a protective measure, though it eventually became more of a residential space.
Its stunning walls are helmed by the iconic Red Tower (see #5), whose gorgeous octagonal form has been part of the city since its heyday as the capital of the Anatolian Seljuk empire.
And many elements of the castle’s different eras can still be seen throughout the space, from ancient items to beautiful carvings along the walls.
You can also take a look at the Mecuddin Cistern, a stone and brick structure was once crucial to the local water supply.
While there are plenty of other similar devices around town – roughly 420 of them! -, this one is certainly one of the biggest and most impressive, at 13 meters wide and 22.5 meters deep… and it still stores and distributes fresh water to this very day!
Take in the breadth and depth of the building on some of the local walking tours, and see how it helped guide the city through the centuries.
2 – Admire the artifacts of the Alanya Archaeological Museum
Even further in the past, you’ll find weapons, pottery, and maybe even a Greek hero or two at the Alanya Archaeological Museum, where antiquity feels closer than ever.
The artifacts here span thousands of years, showing the evolution of humanity and the many vibrant cultures that have made their mark on the region.
Along with the statue of Heracles, which brings remarkably human-like details to the famous mythological figure, you can see Phonecian writings dating back roughly 2,600 years… still perfectly intact!
This is also a great place to take in some of the older art forms of the area, with some beautiful displays of jewelry, mosaics, sculptures, and finely woven rugs.
There’s even a recreation of an older residence, so you can truly feel like you’ve stepped back in time!
3 – Soar upwards on Alanya Teleferik
You’ll want to enjoy all of the best views in town while you’re here… so why not get up above everything in style?
Step onto Alanya Teleferik, and begin a delightful ascent up to the top of the Taurus Mountains, with amazing views all the way along your route.
Watch the beach give way to the scrubland, and beyond, as you disembark and explore the scenery from a new point of view.
But the best part of these lovely cable cars is that they’re not just scenic… they’re functional!
You can actually use them to get to and from some of the most popular tourist hotspots in town, from the fascinating designs of Ehmedek Kalesi (see #20) to the mysterious realms of Damlatas Cave (see #4).
It’s one of the most charming gems in the city’s transit arsenal!
4 – Venture into the stunning chambers of Damlataş Cave
Time to switch things up, and discover spiraling rock formations, ancient limestone, and steadily trickling water… all deep below the ground!
Each section of Damlataş Cave – discovered inadvertently during a construction project – has its own complex of stalagmites and stalactites, carefully shaped by eons of geological forces.
And it’s not just the geological aspects that are amazing; there is a certain special quality to the very air itself!
Hovering perfectly at 22 degrees Celsius (71.6 degrees Fahrenheit), the dry, temperate space is said to have powerful curative properties for asthma patients.
And while it might help them breathe better, every glimpse at the next crystalline formation or primordial-looking set of rocks is sure to take your breath away!
5 – Get a closer look at Red Tower
Standing at the end of the amazing Alanya Castle (see #1), this magnificent structure – also known as Kizil Kule Fortress – Red Tower was once one of the area’s most popular defensive posts… and when you climb to the top and look around, you’ll certainly see why it became so popular
Its distinctive shape and red brick design have helped it become an iconic part of the city, but it’s the story behind it that makes it even more interesting.
The structure was originally commissioned by Sultan Alaeddin Keyqubad I in 1226, and from the start, it was designed to be a military powerhouse, able to hold thousands of soldiers if need be.
Indeed, the spectacular views that you can enjoy today were once crucial tools for the local army, as they kept an eye out for marauding forces.
But it’s also deeply connected to the area’s religious heritage; sharp-eyed visitors may spot the words “Gratitude to Allah” etched onto one of the stones.
Like the rest of the castle, you’ll want to spend some quality time in this space; from gargoyles and bits of graffiti to museum exhibits and well-preserved rooms, every inch of the space feels like a step into the past – but luckily, you won’t have to fight any invading armies while you’re here!
6 – Stroll through Sapadere Canyon
Just 45 minutes from town, you can swap the sea and soaring buildings for the gentler noises of the forest and the tumble of waterfalls… and you’ll love every second of it!
Sapadere Canyon brings you into contact with a quiet, contemplative side of the wilderness, where soaring rocks and tree-filled paths showcase the forest in all of its glory.
Amble along the lovely wooden walkways, and enjoy the fresh air and unspoiled wilderness of this mountainous realm.
And of course, there are also the waterfalls, which pour straight into the pools below in a way that looks utterly inviting – if you can stand the cold water, of course!
Afterwards, you might even have time to explore some of the neighboring territory, including some intriguing caves, and the charming little village of Sapadere itself!
7 – Watch the action at Alanya Marina
With such a powerful seafaring background, it’s little wonder that this town has an excellent spot for boats to come and go – and it’s pretty great for people-watching, too!
The Alanya Marina is a cheery, bustling spot, with a lively procession of yachts moving through its moorings.
In fact, it’s one of the most popular spots for these boats in all of Turkey, perfectly positioned along the Aegean Coast, where sailors of all stripes can pop in for a visit.
This is also a great place to get a taste of the town’s multicultural vibrancy, with all sorts of languages and accents flying through the air.
Whether you’re in the middle of your own sailing expedition or just admiring the ships, it’s a wonderful place to enjoy some fresh air and quality people-watching… and boat-watching, too!
8 – Pay a visit to the Alanya Lighthouse
Another great bit of nautical architecture, the lighthouse is a beacon in both a literal and metaphorical sense.
Built in the 1880s, it has guided vessels through all kinds of weather, and while it’s more of a scenic object today, it’s still a valuable part of the harbor as well.
It has guided countless ships to safety, first as part of the Ottoman Empire, then under French rule; and to this day, it watches over the many boats making their way through town, with a Turkish flag fluttering at its top.
It’s an architectural marvel, with traces of both the original designs and later modifications; and its seaside perch makes it the perfect spot for a relaxing stroll, with the water glistening beside you.
9 – Soak up some fun at Alanya Aquapark
Rafting, sliding, catching a wave or two… it’s a watery free-for-all at Alanya Aquapark!
It’s the perfect place for adventurers of every age, with the littlest travelers enjoying their splashy play areas, and older kids having their pick of exhilarating waterslides.
From the sharp drops of the Orange Slide to the swirling mysteries of Black Hole, each ride offers its own bit of fun… and always with a guaranteed splash at the end!
And of course, there are plenty of attractions for everyone to enjoy, whether you’re paddling through the manufactured currents of the Rafting Challenge or hopping into the wave pool for a taste of the ocean.
There’s even a movie theater with lively 3D shows when you’re ready for thrills of a different sort!
10 – Enjoy the legendary beauty of Kleopatra Beach
The name of this splendid shoreline denotes a certain kind of glamor, but it’s also got an amazing historical background!
According to legend, this was a favorite vacation spot for the legendary Queen Cleopatra, and with water as tranquil as a mirror, it’s easy to see how the beach might have entranced her!
You can dive right in for a proper swim, or spend some time in the shallows; and of course, the warm, soft sands of the beach itself invite you to relax in style.
If you’re feeling a little more energetic, you’ll also have your pick of sports to try, from beach volleyball and jet skiing to parasailing, scuba diving, and surfing.
Or just take some time to enjoy the beauty all around you – after all, this is one of the most popular bits of the coast in all of Turkey!
11 – Indulge in a boat tour
Back out at sea, you’ll find canyons, caves, and maybe a buccaneer or two with the amazing boat tours in Alanya!
Once you’ve climbed aboard your vessel, the gorgeous scenery of the area will unfold before you, from the mighty Oymapinar Dam – the fifth-largest project of its kind in the country – and the soaring walls of the picturesque Green Canyon to wonderful views of beaches and castles.
There are even some excellent pirate cruises! (see #33 for more details.)
From the river to the sea and everywhere in between, there’s nothing quite like a sailing trip to help you get to know the region!
12 – Roam around the Taurus Mountains
Soaring high above the city like gnarled sentries, the Taurus Mountains beckon visitors to enjoy the beauty of nature in full force, where every turn might offer a breathtaking overlook into valleys below.
Keep an eye out for traditional little towns as you bounce through the area on a Jeep, and keep an eye out for unique creatures all along the way, from doves and falcons to jackals, wild boar, and even wolves!
Some of these tours will also include a delicious lunch at Dimcay, a beautiful river that cuts a leisurely path through the area.
13 – Go a little further back in nautical history at Shipyard Alanya
Crowned by old stone arches and filled with tons of eye-catching details, Shipyard Alanya (Tersane) perfectly fits into the modern rhythms of the city, while also showcasing a crucial portion of its past.
Up until the 1960s, it was a fully functional space, where boats of all sorts could come and get repaired – and where new vessels could be built.
But it actually got its start much further back, in the 13th century; and like so many other projects from that era, it was originally used for military means.
In fact, it was once one of the Seljukian empire’s most valuable naval ports, and when you visit today, you’ll get to see some of those original wooden vessels back in their old home!
With its fascinating medieval designs and long history of boatbuilding, it’s a monument to some of the biggest industries in the area’s heyday.
14 – Enjoy a pleasant trip to Manavgat Waterfalls
Dotted with little traditional towns and the occasional passing pelican, the Manavgat River is certainly a sight to behold; and just wait until you get to the big finale!
The Manavgat Waterfalls are a jaw-dropping sight, with their powerful flow crashing downwards in a way that reminds you just how powerful nature can be.
And you can even swim beneath their mighty cascades!
15 – Take a quirky route through town on the City Tour Train
All aboard for excitement!
The City Tour Train is no ordinary locomotive; with music blasting and lights flashing, it’s a wonderfully wacky way to take in all that the town has to offer!
There are some excellent options for a basic tour, where you can get to know the city’s highlights in style.
But it’s also a great option if you’re celebrating something special, or traveling with a larger group; as the vehicle putters around, you’ll be treated to your very own party, with the many harbors and beautiful buildings as a perfect backdrop!
16 – Unlock new worlds on a few jeep tours
Up in the mountains, things can get a little bumpy; but if you’re on one of the local jeep tours, that’s somewhat the point!
Along with the rugged beauty of the Taurus Mountains (see #12), you can delve into the ethereal beauty of Dim Cave (see #36), or bounce along the pathways of Sapadere Canyon (see #6).
And if you want an unforgettable wilderness experience, you can even book an evening excursion, and ride out into the middle of nowhere for an unparalleled view of the sunset above you!
17 – Get into a different kind of nature with a trip to Green Canyon
More than just a beautiful spot, Green Canyon captures the impact of human culture on the natural region… and the results are truly stunning!
Tucked into the Taurus Mountains, the reservoir fits so perfectly into its surroundings that you’d hardly believe it’s the result of a major engineering project; but that just makes the beauty all the more impressive!
The mighty Oymapinar Dam was responsible for creating the stunning lake here, and the greenish tinge of the waters is what gave the area its name.
And during a scenic cruise, you can enjoy the beauty of the water up close, and learn about the impact of the local electricity industry.
You might even catch a glimpse of some local fish making their own circuit below your boat!
18 – Chill out the traditional way at the local turkish baths
You can’t go anywhere in Turkey without trying one of the country’s most famous relaxation methods, and the turkish baths in Alanya certainly don’t disappoint!
Combining traditional techniques with modern luxury, you’ll get an utterly invigorating experience, with steam baths, massages, and even a bit of aromatherapy.
And of course, you can pamper yourself even more at the local spas, where you’ll be scraped, scrubbed, and immersed in tranquil environments with some nice cultural touches.
From face masks to rejuvenating skin treatments, you’ll come out of these pampering sessions feeling like a whole new person!
19 – Hang around the marvelous Ayayorgi Church (Hagios Geogios)
As befits such a historic town, the Ayayorgi Church (Hagios Geogios) / Aram Evliyasi actually blends several different epochs in one building!
Originally created in the Byzantine era, the church also served as a mosque for a spell, changing identities alongside shifting leadership.
There are even older influences on display in the tower, which was put together sometime in the Hellenistic age – several thousand years ago!
And it’s still an impressive part of the landscape, displaying all of those varied elements in unison with one another.
20 – Delve into more classic architecture as you explore Ehmedek Kalesi
You can’t have a properly medieval town without a nice fortress, and Ehmedek Kalesi certainly delivers… even though it’s technically part of Alanya Castle (see #1)!
Strictly speaking, it’s the northern part of the complex, but with its many fortifications and unique function, it practically serves as its own entity!
The three distinctive towers were designed to watch for enemies, while the structure as a whole was meant to protect the valuable inner sanctum of the castle.
The structure also took on other forms over time, hosting a prison and a vast supply of weapons, and even holding the royal treasury for a time!
Walk around for a while, and you’ll almost feel as though you’re back in those days of old!
21 – Try out the original spa treatment at Pamukkale
Sure, hot springs are great… but they’re even better when they’re nestled in otherworldly settings!
The name Pamukkale translates to “Cotton Castle,” and its inspiration is wonderfully self-evident; the strikingly blue waters are completely surrounded by gorgeous rock formations that glisten white against the landscape.
The main mineral in question, travertine, is actually one you might recognize in various household tiles; but here, in its uncultivated, natural form, it’s a particularly stunning sight!
Enjoy a marvelous soak in this unforgettable setting – it’s like taking a bath on the moon!
And while you’re in the area, why not pay a visit to one of the earliest tourist sites in the area?
Some of these tours also include stops at Hierapolis, the legendary city that once served as a spa site in the days of Ancient Rome, where visitors from all over the empire came to enjoy the same tranquil waters that you might find yourself soaking in!
22 – Spend some time in Alaaddin Keykubat Parkı
The statue of a mighty warrior astride his horse is hard to miss, and it’s a fitting welcome to this stunning public space.
The park’s namesake, Alaaddin Keykubat, was one of the Seljukian era’s most prominent sultans, famed for expanding his empire’s physical and intellectual borders, and commissioning several acclaimed palaces and mosques.
He used the city as a winter getaway, and his noble visage – along with one of his famous steeds – still greets visitors to this day.
Take some time to enjoy the peaceful gardens, and ponder the legacy of the powerhouse leader depicted out front!
23 – Use paragliding to get an unforgettable view
This is one sightseeing trip that will make you feel like you’re above it all – and for a few minutes, you will be!
There’s nothing quite like paragliding if you want to get a comprehensive view of the region, and with castles, old monuments, mountains, and the water all perfectly blended together, there are few better places to give the sport a try!
No worries if you’re new to the activity; your guide will be strapped to a tandem harness the whole time, providing great insights into what you’re seeing – and steering the parachute, of course!
This leaves you free to focus on all of the great sights below you, from the gentle curve of the beaches to the unique panorama of the city itself.
You’ll be tempted to stay aloft forever!
24 – Learn about the unique history of Alanya Süleymaniye Camii
This gorgeous mosque isn’t just an amazing religious relic… it’s also a case study of perseverance!
In 1231, it was established as a new place of worship for the era of Muslim rule; but it was soon laid low by, of all things, a bolt of lightning.
It wasn’t until the 1500s that it was properly rebuilt by Sultan Suleiman Khan I, utilizing many of the same stylistic details as the original.
Today, this site is still an active place of worship, maintaining all of its traditional elements in fine form.
Best of all, it still serves its original function today; step inside and absorb the beauty of nearly one thousand years of work and reverence in action!
25 – Take an ancient road trip to Kekova, Demre and Myra
Now, this is what we call a cultural smorgasbord!
On a trip to Kekova, Demre, and Myra, you’ll see ancient churches, beautiful graveyards, and even an old metropolis… that’s completely underwater!
Kekova was once connected to a magnificent Lycian city that eventually surrendered to the waves, and some of those weathered ruins are still visible if you glance into the pristine waters around your boat.
Then it’s off to Demre, home to historic spots like the Church of Saint Nicholas, where you can visit the burial site of the holy man himself – the inspiration for Santa Claus!
And let’s not forget the ancient riverside town of Myra, which once featured a massive theater and plenty of shipping routes, along with an extensive network of stone necropolises that can still be seen in the hills to this day.
Enjoy a true feast for the mind as you explore!
26 – Go rafting at Koprulu Canyon
As one of the region’s most spectacular national parks, Koprulu Canyon is bursting with beauty and life, often fostered by the river cutting through it.
And that same river is home to some of the best rafting in Alanya, with just the right amount of whitewater to really bring the thrills!
While the main focus is on the joyful adrenaline rush of bouncing through rapids, you’ll also get plenty of time to enjoy the scenery around you, whether you’re gazing up at the walls of the canyon itself, or admiring the endless varieties of plant life along the shore.
And if you still haven’t gotten your fill of the area, you can go zip lining above it, or embark on an energetic canyoning adventure through its varied terrain!
27 – Take your sunbathing time to the next level at the best beach clubs
After all of this fun, you may be looking for some quieter diversions; and luckily, there are some excellent beach clubs back in town that will provide you with a wonderfully mellow place to hang out!
Head to Delfino Beach Club Alanya for some incredible bites (from seafood to ice cream to vegan offerings) that you can enjoy on your lounge chair, or bring the whole family to Havana Beach Club, which offers playgrounds and kiddie pools right alongside the main swimming areas.
Indulge in the happy hour offerings at White in White Beach Club, where you can sip colorful cocktails in the shadow of Alanya Castle (see #1), or pop over to OCCO Beach Club & Lounge, where the atmosphere is always festive, and the drinks are always top-notch!
And of course, you can’t miss out on Cocos Beach Club & Lounge, where you can enjoy everything from wine to coffee, or just indulge in some serious pool and jacuzzi time!
28 – Get a little rough and tumble on some quad tours
Maybe you’re looking for an adventure that lets you take the wheel… in more ways than one!
If so, the local quad tours may be just the thing for you!
These hearty vehicles give you the chance to drive over rough paths and through rural areas with ease, granting access to some of the most beautiful parts of the Turkish countryside.
With so much water and endless forests, you may be surprised just how much of this area is covered in desert; but it also makes for some fascinating exploration opportunities!
From mountain ridges to open roads, the world is your oyster once you rev these machines up!
29 – Go scuba diving and find a whole new set of sights
Time to head back to the briny blue, and go deeper than ever before – trust us, the views are worth it!
The seas around here have long been renowned for their excellent scuba diving, filled with enough corals and creatures to make you feel like you’re swimming in a nature documentary.
And no matter what prior experience you’ve had – or even if you’ve had none! -, you’ll quickly fall in love with all of the nuances of the underwater world.
In fact, this is a great area to start mastering the sport, with plenty of renowned schools, and a pretty unbeatable classroom to practice in!
Each dive is its own exciting endeavor; one minute you might be in the midst of a busy school of fish, the next, watching a massive sea turtle sedately float by!
Admire the unique rocks and plants all around you, or just enjoy the gentle rhythms of the Mediterranean!
30 – Get a bit of a classic carnival experience at Lunapark Alanya / Alanya Funfair
For more than three decades, Alanya Lunapark has drawn visitors to its bright lights and varied delights – so why not come and be part of the fun?
This lovely oceanside spot offers up the classic amusement park experience, with bumper cars, a merry-go-round, and a roller coaster.
And if you want some extra excitement, there are plenty of great attractions that will spin you, drop you, and jostle you around to your heart’s content.
Grab yourself a cotton candy, then head over to the Ferris Wheel for a gentle ride with enviable views.
In this fun and festive atmosphere, your inner child will be out to play in no time!
31 – Take a look around Aspendos Theater
You may not be able to catch the latest hit musical here, but Aspendos Theater certainly has its own amazing pedigree – after all, it’s been putting on shows for millennia!
The magnificent venue looks almost exactly as it did some 2,000 years ago, when citizens and travelers from miles around would stop by to enjoy epic productions in the style of Ancient Rome.
Step inside and stand amongst the rows of seats, gazing down at the stage; use your imagination, and you can almost picture the comedies and dramas that took place there, the forerunners to the plays we know and love today.
And of course, this incredible level of preservation has made it a truly valuable relic; you’ll get to learn all about the reach of the empire firsthand as you explore the space!
32 – Get a crash course in political history with a trip to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk Monument
The political history of this region spans all manner of centuries and regimes, but the town is also home to a pretty interesting piece of recent history – and it’s involved with the founding of modern Turkey!
This impressive statue in the middle of town pays tribute to a fittingly grand figure: Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the man that founded the Republic of Turkey.
With inscriptions celebrating peace and two smaller sculptures of children symbolizing the future of the nation, it’s not just a famous piece, but a deeply hopeful one.
You can also get deeper into the story with a visit to the nearby Ataturk House Museum, where the late leader stayed during a visit in 1935.
His dispatches to the locals can be seen in the museum, alongside historic photos and even some of his personal items.
Take some time to explore all three floors, and dive into the fascinating story of this 20th century icon!
33 – Pillage and plunder (or just party) on some pirate boat tours
For an awesome all-ages trip to the briny blue, you can’t do better than pirate boat tours!
Taking the region’s swashbuckling past in a fun new direction, these excursions are one of the best things to do in Alanya for families, combining great sights with all sorts of entertainment – and, of course, plenty of fun buccaneer hijinks!
As you board your ship and set sail in search of treasure, with plenty of great treats and games along the way.
Tuck into a nice buffet, enjoy some refreshing swims, and enjoy all of the different caverns, wildlife sightings, and beautiful surprises that the open water can hold.
And that’s not even counting the dance parties, live performances, and games, all facilitate by your lively crewmates – er, guides.
It’s the most fun you’ll have on any of the seven seas!
34 – Get the whole family in on the splashy fun at Eftalia Island Water Park
Get a little bit of hedonism with your waterslides – and vice versa – when you splash down into Eftalia Island Water Park, which offers fun at every level.
Of course, the slides themselves are the big excitement here; there are racing options, corkscrews, and plenty of wild rides in between.
You can also hang out in the pools, bob down fake rivers, or watch your little ones as they frolick through Kid’s Lagoon, a little paradise built just for them.
But it’s also a place that takes chill time seriously, offering up endless drinks and a buffet for you to indulge in after a long day of splashing and sliding.
Bring some sunscreen – you’ll want to linger a while in this paradise!
35 – Discover the ancient mysteries of Kadiini Cave…
Back to the underground – and this time, you’ll get even further into prehistory!
While Kadiini Cave has many of the same stunning, slightly surreal formations as its neighbors, what really sets it apart are the human remains still preserved within the caverns by the cool, dry air.
During your tour, you can pay your respects to the bones of long-ago citizens, including quite a few that have been dated to the Paleolithic era… a mere 5,000 years ago!
And while much of the cave is still something of a mystery, it offers a remarkable look into how some of the area’s earliest civilizations interacted with the natural wonders around them.
36 – … And keep the underground adventures going at Dim Cave
Only half an hour from town, you can take a surreal trip to Dim Cave / Dim Magarasi, which holds all sorts of cultural and scientific wonders within its stone walls.
As one of the largest caverns in the country, it’s a vivid example of the power of time; once a simple collection of rocks, it morphed into its present form thanks to the steady eroding forces of water over millennia, which eventually carved holes and chambers into the stone.
And while it was used for many years as a place for shepherds and hunters to take refuge from the elements, it now serves as a full-fledged attraction, filled with all sorts of weird wonders created entirely by the forces of nature.
The atmosphere here is almost holy in its way; as you head down into the cave itself, you’ll be surrounded by towering stalagmites, enticing stalactites, and some powerful primordial karst formations, all wonderfully illuminated by colorful lighting displays.
And the further you explore, the more you’ll fall in love with the unique features here, including the individual chambers with their own stunning formations.
Oh, and there’s even an underground lake!
37 – Roll out and into adventure on some buggy tours
Blending the ease of Jeeps and the autonomy of ATVs, buggy tours will show you just how wonderful the wilderness can be!
Whether you’re driving or in the passenger seat, you can get a little dirt on your shoes and put a smile on your face as you explore the Taurus Mountains and surrounding areas.
While your guide will be leading the way at all times, you get to experience the delight of navigating one of these exciting vehicles for yourself – and of course, the surrounding landscapes make the adventure even more exhilarating!
