This season, Angel Sanchez was drawn back to the Fifties — in particular Grace Kelly’s 1956 wedding dress created by MGM costume designer Helen Rose. While he celebrated the timeless elegance of that iconic creation — using plenty of lace on the bodices of his mostly full-skirt gowns — the designer added a modern edge via acrylic, mirrors and patent leather details. Illusion seams gave the dresses a sexy twist — carried over from the designer’s fall 2016 ready-to-wear collection — balanced by the whimsical charm of plexi floral embroideries.
Among the key looks were a macramé lace gown, whose floral embroidery climbed high up the neck and descended down the racer-back, and a dotted-lace gown with cascading skirt. The palette for the collection spanned various shades of white and soft blue — colors inspired, Sanchez said, by the morning dew.
