Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. xxxix, 415 pp. [2], frontispiece portrait lithograph, title vignette, half title, contemporary half-calf with marbled boards, title gilt on decorated spine, marbled endpapers, speckled edges, from the Library of Papadopoulos, copy in very good condition, Paul Ledoux / Ponthieu / H. Langlois, Paris, first edition, 1827. Cerfberr gives a long account of himself in the preface, stating that after the peace of Amiens in 1803 he went to Constantinople and took service under Sultan Selim III as a colonel in the New Army, whereupon he converted to Islam and married a Turkish woman. In 1809 he returned to France and then set out again on his travels, through Scandinavia, Russia and the Balkans, looking to take service as a mercenary. There may be some truth in his account. Larousse states that Cerfberr offered to carry despatches to Napoleon in Egypt and that he was taken prisoner by the English; perhaps on his release he went to Constantinople. His return to France was probably occasioned by the revolt of the Janissaries in 1808. In 1813 he offered his services to Caimacam of Bosnia and eventually took service with Ali Pasha. First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Large 8vo. Together 6 volumes (collations below). Contemporary French red morocco, smooth spines lettered direct, all edges gilt (some wear to binding extremities, spines a little darkened). These volumes include all of Savary's accounts of his travels to Egypt and Greece, plus his very important translation of the Koran from the Arabic into French, with a biography of Mohamed; the present set was beautifully bound in the late 18th- or very early 19th-century. Claude-Etienne Savary (1750-1788) was an orientalist, pioneer of Egyptology and translator of Koran. In 1776 he departed for Egypt, and after having remained successively in Alexandria and Cairo, he explored (for nearly two years) several islands of Greece and the Archipelago, in particular those of Rhodes. Savary provided many details concerning the daily life of the population. A fluent speaker of Arabic, Savary's sensitive and vibrant account is a contrast striking with the austere description by Volney which appeared two years later. Savary's was the first literary voyage in Egypt, undertaken long before Chateaubriand, Lamartine or Flaubert. Paris: Bleuet jeune, Paris An VII (1798). 8vo. Three volumes. 2 ff., xvi, 398 pp.; 2 ff., 291 pp., 2 ff.; 330 pp., 1 f. PRINTED ON FINE PAPER. "Nouvelle edition," revised and corrected. The learned description of Egypt (ancient and contemporary) by Claude Savary, which is notable for its extensive quotations of scarce and almost unknown Arabian writers. Illustrated with four folding, engraved plates: three maps, and one plan of the interior of the Great Pyramid. Savary travelled to Egypt from 1776 to 1779, and spoke Arabic. The first two volumes constitute the particulars of the voyage; the third is devoted to his study of the Egyptian religion and mythology, and is based on Arabian texts. Paris, Bleuet jeune, An VII (1798). 8vo. 2 ff., 382 pp. PRINTED ON FINE PAPER. Bound with: Les Amours d'Anas-Eloujoud et Ouardi. Ouvrage posthume. Paris, Bluet, 1799. 8vo. 2 ff., 58 pp., 1 f. PRINTED ON FINE PAPER. * Savary left Egypt in September 1779 to continue his travels in Greece and Asia Minor, where he spent nearly two years. His letters on Greece are descriptive of the places and inhabitants, especially the Dodecanese. This is a beautifully printed account of Savary's voyage to Alexandria, relating especially to the island of Rhodes, and Crete, decorated with a folding map and folding plate. Weber 584. Atabey 1092; Blackmer 1493 (first edition). WITH: [Claude Savary, translator]. A la Mecque, l'an de l'Hegire 1165 [i.e. Paris 1783]. THREE WORKS IN TWO VOLUMES. 8vo. xvi, 230 pp., 269, [1] pp.; [4], 464, [4] pp. Some minor foxing. * First edition of this important, and highly enlightened translation, the second attempt to translate the Koran into French. According to Norman Daniel, this would have certainly been in the luggage of Napoleon when he went to Egypt (see: Daniel, "Islam and the West," p. 313). Savary is usually accredited with having introduced the word Koran (instead of Al Coran) as the standard (see his note 1 in the Preface). He prepared his translation in Egypt where he stayed from 1776 to 1779. In his opinion one could not separate the Koran from its surroundings, thus living in an Muslim environment would benefit his translation. Savary not only, as Daniel phrases it, "humanises and romanticises the old familiar way of looking at the Prophet" (p. 313), he also furthered and qualified the research into the life of Mohammed by employing the terms used by Islamic historians and by ridding Mohammed of some of the stigma's that were commonplace in the West. He profited greatly from his good command of Arabic, which he also used for his well-known Lettres sur l'Égypte and the posthumously published Grammaire de la langue arabe vulgaire. In his Preface Savary very much criticises Du Ryer's translation, which he labels as "une rapsodie platte & ennuyeuse". To prove the superiority of his work he includes a passage of Du Ryer's translation, followed by his own. Marracci's translation he calls a word for word translation in barbaric Latin, though he prefers it over that of Du Ryer. He explains his methodology to be a verse for verse translation, claiming it to be more true to the style and spirit of its original. The added abridged version of the Life of Mohammed seems to be inspired by that of G. Sale's, which had recently been published. The notes are also after Marracci and Sale. First edition. Octavo (). [1]-414 pp. With a full color fontispiece of the Dalai Lama at age thirty-four and numerous full-page black and white photographs throughout. With maps printed on the endpapers. Publisher's original orange cloth. Front board stamped in gilt. Spine lettered and stamped in gilt. Minor stain to front board. Binding slightly skewed. Jacket chipped and creased a bit along edges and spine extremities. Jacket a bit dust soiled and with some tape repairs on the inside bottom of spine. Overall a very good copy. "For more than twenty years the late Sir Charles Bell, acting as the Dali Lama's political adviser, was in a unique position to study him as a man, as a ruler, and as the head of a religion permeating the lives of many millions of people. It is an authoritative book, teeming with interest and detailed information, and as the central figure of the King-Priest emerges, so also does the astonishing background of the country and people which he ruled- the splendid mountainous scenery, the way of life and curious customs of the inhabitants, the amazing fortress-palace of the Dalai Lama on the Potala Hill and, above all, the little-known and ancient religious beliefs and practices of the country. Sir Charles Bell wrote much about Tibet, and it is fitting that this book, completed shortly before his death, should be, the most notable of his literary achievements." (From the front flap). Strikingly bound in heavy, sturdy woven multi-colored pictorial cloth boards stamped in yellow, white, blue, green; and with bright gilt lettering on the front boards and on the spine. Top edges gilded. With bevelled boards and a wonderful pictorial front board painting featuring Alice and the Duchess in a long flowing yellow satin gown. Fraying and wear to the top and bottom of the spine ends and the corners. The top two corners are slightly bumped. With a tiny pinprick tear in the middle of the spine cloth just below the title panel. The hinges are tender but holding nicely. With "Loving wishes for a happy birthday from Auntie Douglas, 1909," inscribed in ink on the half-title page. The entire book is printed on heavy white stock which takes the glorious color plates in sharp register. A very handsome copy of this scarce edition of Alice. Re: The Illustrations The manuscript was illustrated by Carroll himself who added 37 illustrations printed in a facsimile edition in 1887.[21] John Tenniel provided 42 wood-engraved illustrations for the published version of the book.[63] The first print run was destroyed (or sold to the US[64]) at Carroll's request because he was dissatisfied with the quality. There are only 22 known first edition copies in existence.[63] The book was reprinted and published in 1866.[21] Tenniel's detailed black-and-white drawings remain the definitive depiction of the characters.[65] Tenniel s illustrations of Alice do not portray the real Alice Liddell,[42] who had dark hair and a short fringe. Alice has provided a challenge for other illustrators, including those of 1907 by Charles Pears and the full series of colour plates and line-drawings by Harry Rountree published in the (inter-War) Children's Press (Glasgow) edition. Other significant illustrators include: Arthur Rackham (1907), Willy Pogany (1929), Mervyn Peake (1946), Ralph Steadman (1967), Salvador Dalí (1969), Graham Overden (1969), Max Ernst (1970), Peter Blake (1970), Tove Jansson (1977), Anthony Browne (1988), Helen Oxenbury (1999),[66] and Lisbeth Zwerger (1999). (Wikipedia) Circa 1908, published in London. The first edition, thus, with the Rountree illustrations and color plates.

A photograph by Man Ray was used for the cover. This provocation of the surrealists in favore of Violette Nozières during her trial didn't produce the planned effect, as the books sent to Corti, the French distributor, were seized at the border and sale was prohibited in France. First Edition. Quarto. Koolhaas's immensely influential "retroactive manifesto" for Manhattan architecture. The dust jacket image derives from a painting by Madelon Vriesendorp, Koolhaas's wife. In it the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building, their forms softened like a pair of Dalí watches, lie together in bed in apparent post-coital exhaustion while Rockerfeller Center, playing the jealous husband in this surreal architectural drama, emerges from a doorway at stage left and shines his spotlight onto the guilty pair. A near fine copy in pink boards with black lettering. Illustrated jacket with minor rubbing and short edge-tears, else also near fine. A pleasing copy.

First Edition, First Printing. Signed presentation copy from Darryl F. Zanuck, film mogul of 20th Century - Fox, to artist Salvador Dali inscribed on the printed half-title: ÒMy dear Salvador Dali, With great respect and friendship from your No 1 admirer - Darryl.Ó Opposite the inscription on the next page Zanuck has drawn an amusing imitation of Don Quixote on horseback mimicking DaliÕs style and the fact that Dali would often do a Don Quixote drawing when presenting books. Salvador Dali and his wife Gala escaped the Nazis in 1940 and spent the next 8 years in the United States. In Hollywood, they became good friends with Darryl F. Zanuck, who hired Dali to create the dream sequence and be set decorator for the 1942 film, Moontide, starring Jean Gabin and Ida Lupino. On page 274 of this book, Gussow records that Darryl and his girlfriend Genevieve Gilles often had Ò. Salvador Dali and his wife join them. ÔHe and Dali,Ó recalled Genevieve, Òall they talked about was maisons de tolerance [brothels]. Always sex, between Dali and him. ItÕs boring when you talk about sex during dinner.Ó Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Illustrated. Zanuck was one of the finest producers of films in Hollywood's Golden Age and this a terrific association with the great surrealist artist Dali who was the darling of Hollywood in the 1940s. Enclosed in a morocco and cloth clamshell box.

Along with Coco Chanel, her greatest rival, she is regarded as one of the most prominent figures in fashion between the two World Wars. Starting with knitwear, Schiaparelli's designs were heavily influenced by Surrealists like her collaborators Salvador Dalí and Jean Cocteau. Her clients included the heiress Daisy Fellowes and actress Mae West. Schiaparelli did not adapt to the changes in fashion following World War II and her couture house, Maison Schiaparelli closed in 1954. The house was subsequently revived in 2014. Jacket design by Cecil Beaton A first edition of Don't Tell Alfred, the final book in Nancy Mitford's trilogy of novels narrated by Fanny Wincham (nee Logan). The story is based twenty years after The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate. Fanny finds herself in Paris after her husband Alfred is appointed the British Ambassador. Uncle Matthew, the Bolter and Hecktor Dexter return and are joined by a new cast of Parisian characters and Fanny's children, the four of whom place the plot firmly in the 1950s - 'Basil, a teddy boy who runs a tourist agency, is soon followed by his bearded brother David, a Zen Buddhist with a speechless wife and an adopted Chinese baby. Meanwhile the two youngest brothers run away from Eton and take jobs as publicity agents to Yanky Fonzy, the disc star.' Cecil Beaton provided the dust jacket, depicting teddy boy Basil in an impressive enfilade.
