Maria Martins - a Dialogue between Feminine Forms
Maria Martins – Formas Femininas Em Diálogo2017 •
Maria Martins was a Brazilian sculptor, known for her “strange sculptural forms” and for the relationships she had, be it with her husband, an Ambassador, or with other illustrious artists from the beginning of the XX century, such as Marcel Duchamp. In this article, I propose to reconsider, first of all, the critique of her work, in the 1950’s and the beginning of the XXI century, when it was reviewed, and, especially, to demonstrate possible connections between her hybrid sculptural forms and the artistic productions of the Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven and Sophie Calle. For that purpose, I analyze some of her sculptures, like Iara and Imbossible, but also assemblages and ready-mades, by the Baroness, as well as two projects by Sophie Calle included in Double Game (1999), establishing relations between these works and some of the objects constructed or “reappropriated” by Marcel Duchamp. After these analyses and the “dialogues” they form, one can perceive that the dimensions of the female body (but also that of the human, animal e vegetal bodies), in the sculptures and other objects, repositions the “model” or the object of reproduction as the one who also casts her look over others, creates and reflects. Thus, the names of the works of art and of the positions occupied by the artists –baroness, ambassadress, detective, etc. –are retakenfrom distinct meanings and perspectives, no longer indicating limiting positions or functions; and the titles of the works developed by them are also rethought. Through these connections and their consequent differences, reflections over the questions of reproduction, replicas e copies are formulated (not to mention the molds or models) and, as a consequence, over the problematic of the series, which leads us to think of the modernity as viewed by theorists like Walter Benjamin and Jacques Derrida.
Abstract: The present article addresses brazilian sculptor Maria Martins, who developed her career with participation in the surrealist avant-garde, and the transformations that the work of the artist experienced since 1943. These changes resulted in a progressive deformation of the form in her sculptures, that even though kept being figurative, changed in a subjective way in the representation of the human figure.
