Honoring Architect Eduardo Souto de Moura

Eduardo Souto de Moura will be awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize—the field's highest honor—this June in Washington D.C. To celebrate we're presenting a roundup of the innovative projects he has created throughout his career.

Souto de Moura was commissioned by artist Paula Rego to design a museum in Cascais, Portugal, to display her work. Completed in 2009, the Paula Rego Museum is clad in red concrete and comprises two pyramid towers and four wings.

Souto de Moura, who began his career designing residential projects, built this house in Serra da Arrábida, Portugal, in 2002. The house's stark exterior is a sharp contrast to its surroundings.

The Cinema House in Oporto, Portugal, was built in 2003 for film director Manoel de Oliveira. The residence resembles a twin-lens camera, referencing the homeowner's profession.

Souto de Moura's 2004 stadium in Braga, Portugal, was erected on a former quarry. Granite was blasted from the site to make concrete for the structure and to create the stone face that closes one end of the arena.

In 1997, Souto de Moura converted the 12th century Santa Maria do Bouro convent into an inn, modernizing the building's interiors, while retaining the old-world look of its exteriors. The Pritzker Prize jury noted the architect's ability to take "a building from rubble to reinterpretation."

For a 1994 project in Bom Jesus, near Braga, Portugal, the architect devised a five-level property cut into the hillside. A grass roof crowns the two-story home, with a pool occupying one of two terraced levels descending from the house.

The Burgo Tower in Porto, Portugal, completed in 2007, explores horizontal and vertical space with a three-story horizontal structure next to a 20-story tower. The Pritzker jury praised the way the two buildings are "in dialogue with each other and the urban landscape."
