Georges Rouault by Pierre Courthion

Georges Rouault (1871-1958) is a lonely figure in modern art. He stands in enigmatic grandeur in the vast panorama of movements, schools, and excursions that constitute the art of our agitated time - a monolith amid turbulence.

He was of the same generation as most of the giants of the twentieth century art, and was formed by the same forces. But whereas the consensus of our art has been in the direction of less and less involvement with what is glibly referred to as "life" Rouault was from the first deeply enmeshed in the moral and social problems of man. Good and evil, suffering and expiation, hypocrisy, resignation, faith, justice, the human condition: these were his subject matter, his obsession.

Rouault went far beyond Daumier, immensely far beyond Toulouse, in imaging the photos of all who suffer at the hands of man for the sins of man. While he abhorred the mock piety and pretensions of professionally religious art (along with all conservative, "proper" art), he was himself a religious artist, one of the few truly religious artists since the Renaissance.

And this is what makes him such a phenomenon in our time. His forms, techniques, and the spirit of his work seem to relate him to expressionism and other modern idioms. But he is strictly sui generis, a magnificent colorist, a vivid and brutal draftsman, infinitely rich despite the closely spaced variations of his selected themes. His savagery and bluntness of statement, the daring of his picture building, are modern; few artists were ever more implacably personal; but he clasps hands across the centuries with Daumier, Rembrandt, Grunewald and El Greco.

The author of this book, Pierre Courthion, has been gathering his materials for years, first from the artist himself and then from the family. Throughout, he has been advised and encouraged by Mlle Isabelle Rouault, her father's artistic executor. The catalogue of works in this book was made with her collaboration, and the gravure color plates by the famous French printers, Draeger Freres, were executed subject to her requirements and approval.

Rouault is frequently quoted in the text, and a special section of his writings is included; the hundreds of illustrations in the Classified Catalogue trace his artist course in minute detail. Thus this volume can easily claim to be the most complete, authoritative, and well-documented work ever published on this major figure in recent world art.

Georges Rouault - Miserere - Introduction by Anthony Blunt

There is no doubt that Miserere is to be considered the Georges Rouault's masterpiece, the work to which he devoted the most time and effort and which undoubtedly synthesizes his creation as a whole. The nuances of black and gray, which the camera is incapable of capturing, are so subtle and ingenious. Nowhere in the intensity of Rouault's vision better seen than in this magnificent series of engravings. Nor has any more deeply significant commentary on our civilization been recorded.

Georges Rouault - Miserere - ז'ורז רואו

Georges Rouault - ז'ורז רואו

There are 58 plates in all, falling into two sections: Miserere, the artist plea for compassion, and Guerre, his castigation of man's ultimate folly. Originally engraved between 1918 and 1924, they where only exhibited for the first time in 1948 when a catalog edition, now out of print, was published both in English and in French.

For the preset volume a considerably large format has been chosen and the plates have been reproduced by deep-etched gravure on one side of the paper only. No care has been spared by the artist's daughter, Isabelle Rouault, and Arnold Fawcus, publisher of the first edition, in order to obtain the finest possible reproduction of these engravings which Rouault himself considered of capital importance in his work.
Apart from their striking beauty and the timeliness of their messages, the plates are of great interest as a contribution to the art of engraving. In the words of J. T. Soby, "Rouault has almost literally painted on copper".

Georges Rouault - Miserere - Introduction by Anthony Blunt - ז'ורז רואו

Miserere  by Georges Rouault

The book includes the English translation of Rouault's preface, the series of 58 engravings with titles reproduced in facsimile from the artist's handwriting, and 18 plates comparing various successive states with the final engravings. There is an introduction by Sir Anthony Blunt, Keeper of the Queen's Pictures and Director of the Courtault Institute, London, and a foreword to this edition by Isabelle Rouault.

Rouault - The Great Draughtsman by Waldemar George and Genevieve Nouaille-Rouault

Georges Rouault (1871-1958) was born in Paris during the last days of the Paris Commune. At the age of fourteen he was apprenticed to a glass painter who was restoring mediaeval stained glass windows. Familiarity with the stained glass instilled in Rouault a love of glowing color and a taste for defining his figures with heavy black contours. Six years later he was admitted to the Echole des Beaux Arts in Paris, where he was a pupil of Moreau. Moreau's influence was evident in his early works, but by 1905, many of the idioms in Rouault's art were already established.

For a short time Rouault aligned himself with the Fauvists and exhibited in the famous Fauve show in 1905, but he went on to develop his own distinctive style and remained apart from the groups and systems of aesthetics.

Rouault resorted to themes with a message, ignoring those who were becoming increasingly abstract. He even brought back religious painting in a world increasingly skeptical. He was deeply concerned with the worst evils of civilization, and he depicted the misery and degradation of prostitutes, the hypocrisy and self interest of bourgeois parvenus, gendarmes, lawyers and judges, the loneliness of clowns and vagabonds. Rouault continued to depict his deeply felt religious convictions throughout his life, and deserves to be called the greatest religious painter since Rembrandt.

In this volume, Waldemar George discusses the destiny and genius of Rouault, tracing the influences and affinities of the great artist. There is also an essay by Genevieve Nouaille-Rouault, the eldest daughter of Georges Rouault. This book is beautifully illustrated with 45 watercolors and gouaches, reproduced in full color.

The scholastic texts in the book include interesting studies by Jacques Riviere, Jean Cassou, Cogniat Raymond, Pierre Courthion, Bernard Dorival and Gaetan Picon just to name some of the major art historians and art authors who covered Roualut's career from its early stages. It also includes testimonies of Roualt's closest friends such as Leo Lehmann, who was Roualt's classmate at the workshop of Gustave Moreau and the writer Raissa Maritain who recalled the acuity of Rouault's painting: "sprung from the depths of man".

The writings of many other artists, art critics, journalists, art companions and family members such as L'Abbe Morel, R.P. Th. Calmel, R.P. Cocagnac, Francois Mauriac, Andre Malraux, Christian Zervos, Maurice Brillant, Marcel Arland and the artist's daughter Genevieve Nouaille-Rouault reveal the innermost life of the great artist - an indisputable important collectors' item.
