Rare and sought after Joaquim Tenreiro, set of eight armchairs, rosewood, cane, Brazil, circa 1960.
One of Tenreiro's most collectible and sought after chairs. These examples are in amazing original condition with no breaks or repairs in the frame or the rattan cane.
Provenance: From a 1960's Brazilian Private Yacht
.
An exceptional set of eight chairs designed by the Brazilian master designer and woodworker Joaquim Tenreiro. The dining chairs' main feature is their wide, luxurious cane seat and light, open high-quality rosewood frame. The flames in the rosewood make sure these side chairs are colorful even though the shapes and forms of this set are open and solemn.
Chairs come with newly upholstered lambswool cushions.
Tenreiro explained his choice in design by trying to design something different than what already existed. He though chairs in his time were a remnant towards to past and were too heavy, disproportioned, and uncomfortable. 'So I created lighter, more functional, and more comfortable furniture. After all, furniture, like so many other things that humans use, had to adapt to the times, take new directions.' The combination of the rich rosewood with the cane is both a timeless combination as it is a trademark of Tenreiro's work and oeuvre.
Joaquim Tenreiro (1906-1992) was born in Portugal into a family of woodworkers, which led him to start to make furniture from a young age. Here, he also studied painting and geometric drawing. In 1928 he moved to Brazil, where he began to work with Laubisch & Hirth and Leandro Martins, manufacturers that were specialized in European furniture. This experience has partly led to him rejecting design in the furniture with a European tendency. His first piece of furniture was part of a commission by Oscar Niemeyer. In 1943, he founded his furniture shop, the Langenbach & Tenreiro workshop. As mentioned before, Tenreiro strongly opposed the European modernists and the Bauhaus. Instead, Tenreiro went for a more Brazilian, South-American in which he had the natural materials of Brazil have a strong influence such as cane and jacaranda. His strong relationship with wood alongside the influences of his geometric art and drawing are what define his original, strong style.
