The Han Solo movie will be an origin story for Chewbacca, too

The scruffy-looking nerf-herder of the Star Wars universe won’t be the only one having his origin story told in the upcoming Han Solo movie hitting theaters in 2018. His Wookiee co-pilot Chewbacca will also feature prominently in the film.

Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger has confirmed the presence of the Millennium Falcon’s ferocious fuzzball in the still-untitled movie, which is intended to offer fans a glimpse at the early days of the iconic smuggler Han Solo — and now, apparently, will show his history with Chewbacca, too.

Iger indirectly announced Chewie’s presence in the film during the Deutsche Bank 2016 Media, Internet & Telecom Conference earlier this week (via The Wrap) when he previewed the studio’s slate of future projects. While discussing the Star Wars universe, Iger mentioned this year’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and then looked ahead to the next film in the studio’s “anthology” series of Star Wars spinoff films.

“We have others in the works, including one, which is an origin story about Han Solo and Chewy,” he said. “That will come after Star Wars 8 in 2018. And then there’ll be possibly be more thereafter.”

While it was long assumed that Chewbacca would factor into the Han Solo movie, which will be directed by The LEGO Movie filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Iger’s description of the project is the first official confirmation that the famous Wookiee will indeed play a role in the film — and not just a supporting part.

In the Star Wars canon, Chewbacca is said to owe Han Solo a “life boon” after the latter helped free the Wookiee from enslavement at some point prior to the events of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. He was seen commanding some of the Wookiee forces during the Battle of Kashyyyk in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith alongside Jedi Master Yoda, and helped the latter escape when the clone troopers turned against the Jedi in that film. He of course then played a prominent role in all three installments of the original trilogy.

Franchise actor Peter Mayhew portrayed Chewbacca in all of the films, but due to age ceded some of the more physical elements of the performance to Finnish actor Joonas Suotamo in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. It’s expected that Suotamo will reprise the role for the Han Solo movie. The coveted role of a young Han Solo has yet to be cast.

Although the film has yet to receive an official title, the Han Solo movie is scheduled to hit theaters May 25, 2018.

5 sci-fi and action movies like Rebel Moon you should watch
A woman poses as dusk approaches in Rebel Moon.

Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon has hit Netflix this week, and people are already making comparisons between it and other works of cinema. Like many other iconic films, this epic space opera draws a lot from director Akira Kurosawa's groundbreaking film, Seven Samurai. This tale follows a village of farmers who seek the help of the titular warriors to stop a swarm of bandits from stealing their crops. Snyder's movie takes this plot and places it within a cosmic setting, depicting a young woman who assembles fighters from across the galaxy to defend her home from the invading Motherworld.

Since Seven Samurai has inspired many of cinema's greatest filmmakers, it's easy to find similarities between Rebel Moon and many other classic pictures in both the action and sci-fi genres. For better or worse, Rebel Moon has left audiences wanting more, and they can remedy this by watching these five movies.

From Prequelists to Reylos, these are the 9 definitive types of Star Wars fans
Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Star Wars fans don't get along. The fandom has been called toxic and divided, and many times, it's lived up to that stereotype.

But I, for one, count the diversity of the fanbase as a positive. It's what's led to the wide range of stories, genres, and media types over the years, each generating its own small base of fans. More broadly, these fanbases are created based on your generation and what part of the series you gravitated to first for whatever reason. I hope you'll be able to find yourself among at least one of these waves of Star Wars fans and start to see that there's enough room at the table for us all.

Haley Joel Osment in A.I. Artificial Intelligence.

Even the best movies can be derailed by a terrible ending. That's true of any genre, but especially so for sci-fi. Far too often, a film will come along with such a great science fiction premise that it seems like it just can't miss. But if the creative team behind the movie doesn't meticulously craft its ending, then it can all fall apart faster than you can say Honest Trailers.

In honor of The Marvels, a future inductee on this list, we're picking seven of the worst sci-fi movie endings of all time. If you've seen these movies, you know full well how these endings played out. But for anyone who wants to avoid spoilers, then consider this your first and only spoiler warning.
