Aimez-vous les uns les autres refers to the plate 31 from Rouault’s “Miserere” series of etchings, to be considered the artist’s masterpiece, the work which synthesizes his creation as a whole. Rouault was one of the most passionate Christian artists of the 20th century, depicting numerous works with religious subjects. Because of his use of colours and his instinctive pictorial gesture, Rouault is associated with Fauves and Expressionists, although not one of the original movement. In the present work, the viewer is facing the cruci-fied Christ, a T-shape is dividing the quadrants of the painting.
Intense and meditative Aimez-vous les uns les autres is characterized by its simplicity of forms, its luminous colours and the bold black lines used to delineate form, referencing in particular his interest in medieval glass.
