Chevrolet Tahoe And Suburban Get Refresh With New Interior For 2025

Following

Sales in numerous segments of the automotive industry have been dominated the same players for many years. In midsize sedans, the Toyota Camry has led the way since the mid-1990s. Ford’s F-Series has topped the full-size pickup market for even longer. When it comes to full-size, body-on-frame SUVs, it’s all about General Motors’ family of big utilities and in particular, the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban. The big Chevys are getting a refresh for model year 2025 with revised front end styling and a new interior with more tech.

The current generation Tahoe/Suburban are only a couple of years old at this point and they still look pretty fresh on the outside so the design changes are pretty subtle. The headlights that were previously across the upper portion of the corners have been moved down into the lower portion, mirroring the theme found on most other recent Chevrolet utilities.

Where the horizontal headlights previously sat is a pair of slimmer daytime running lamps. The C-shaped segment below is now a bit taller and wraps around the headlamps. At the rear, the interior details of the taillamps have also been revised, the rest of the back end is essentially carryover. One important update at the rear however, is a revised version of the hands-free tailgate. As long as the key fob is present in a pocket or bag, the tailgate will now open without waving your foot under the bumper trying to find the right spot.

The bigger changes are on the inside of these big utilities where they get an all-new look that shares a lot with Chevrolet’s new EVs. Like the Silverado, Blazer and Equinox EVs, the Tahoe/Suburban get a display layout consisting of two slightly overlapping displays with the center touchscreen angled slightly toward the driver. The central screen is the same 17.7-inch diagonal unit found in the Silverado EV combined with an 11-inch instrument cluster display.

The awkward to use transmission shift keys on the dashboard have been replaced with the same electronic column shift lever also found in the Silverado. The infotainment system is the same Android Automotive setup as the EVs including Google Automotive Services such as Maps, Assistant and the Play store for downloading additional apps.

Chevrolet has added several tech features to the updated Tahoe/Suburban. The interior motion detection system uses a radar sensor mounted on the inside of the driver’s side C-pillar to detect the presence of occupants in the second and third-rows of seats. The sensor is sensitive enough to detect the breathing of a sleeping baby in a car seat. If motions are detected after the truck is parked and turned off, the driver will get a series of escalating alerts to check the back seats. These types of cabin monitoring systems are going to be appearing on a number of new vehicles beginning in 2024 and the Tahoe and Suburban are the first from GM to offer this feature.

Like most other new vehicles, the Tahoe/Suburban are also equipped with an array of exterior cameras for driver assistance functions like Super Cruise. GM is now leveraging those cameras to provide features like automatic crash recording and security recording. Of course, other automakers like Tesla have had this capability for years, but at least GM is finally getting there.

The SUVs also have a standard suite of driver assist features including an enhanced automatic emergency braking system, forward collision alert, lane keeping assistance, blindspot monitoring and pedestrian and cyclist auto braking. An updated version of Super Cruise hands-free/eyes-on assist will also be available. The trailer navigation system helps drivers find routes based on the trailer size information they provide so that they can stay within weight limits and fit under bridges. The trailer tire health algorithm gives driers alerts to try to prevent trailer tire blowouts while the forward path indication helps drivers maneuver by overlaying guidelines on the surround view display to show where the trailer will go while turning.

Under the skin, the basics carry over, although Chevy has done some retuning of the four-wheel independent suspension to improve ride quality and handling while adaptive air suspension and magnetic ride dampers continue to be available.

Three engine options continue to be available, with the 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter gas V8s being unchanged. The smooth running 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder diesel engine gets a big revamp for 2025 with a new compressor on the turbocharger, higher-flow fuel injectors, new steel pistons with improved oil cooling jets and better thermal management. Power on the diesel is increased to 305-horsepower with 495 lb-ft of torque.

The updated Suburban and Tahoe will continue to be built at GM’s Arlington, Texas assembly plant along with the GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade with production slated to begin in late 2024.
