Beauty Experiment: Those "Bump It" Hair Inserts You've Seen on TV

It's a trendy hair bump, in a box! You've probably seen the commercials for Bump It! hair inserts and wondered how--and if--these thingamajiggies work. Naturally, I had to road-test 'em. (Even though this challenge seemed rather unadventurous compared to recent ones, such as slathering Monistat and Pampers brand products on my face.)

(Even though this challenge seemed rather unadventurous compared to recent ones, such as slathering Monistat and Pampers brand products on my face.)

Here's the short version of the commercial, in case you haven't caught it yet.

I was pretty psyched when I got my BumpIts in the mail, since I love retro 60s hair bumps but am not much good at teasing my hair to achieve height--I always freak out and feel like it looks too ratty and end up smoothing it back down. Here's what comes in the BumpIt box: Five plastic hair inserts, in various sizes. They come in different colors, too.

You just pull a section of your hair forward, tuck a BumpIt underneath, then smooth the hair back over it, making sure to evenly distribute it across the insert's little teeth. It takes a bit of trial and error to get hair to cover the BumpIt naturally, but it's pretty darn easy overall. (Though I have thick hair; I'd love to hear from anyone with thinner hair who's tried these.) I did this half-up 'do before going to dinner one night, and it stayed in totally securely, and none of my friends noticed I had something hiding under my hair.

I liked this half-back hairstyle because the hairpins helped to hold the BumpIt in place, just in case. I'd otherwise be paranoid it would fall out at some point.

Whatcha think? Like my bump? It's not the most dramatic one, but it's a start. Have any of you tried a BumpIt yet? Got a secret to teasing your hair high without help from a piece of plastic? For more reviews of as-seen-on-TV hair doodads, check out our latest beauty slideshow!
