Parque Lage, Rio de Janeiro

Parque Lage, Rio de Janeiro

Parque Henrique Lage is a public park situated in the city of Rio de Janeiro, specifically located in the Jardim Botânico neighborhood, nestled at the base of the Corcovado mountain, where you'll find the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue.

The park's grounds were originally the private residence of Henrique Lage, an industrialist, and his wife, Gabriella Besanzoni, a renowned singer. In the 1920s, Henrique Lage enlisted the services of the Italian architect Mario Vodret to redesign their mansion, and the interior was adorned with paintings by Salvador Payols Sabaté.

Fast forward to the 1960s, and this estate was transformed into a public park, complete with walking trails that wind through subtropical forest areas. Within the former mansion itself, you can find the Visual Arts School of Parque Lage and a café that welcomes the public. Interestingly, this mansion served as the hospitality house for the British Olympic Team and gained further fame by being featured in the 2003 music video for Snoop Dogg's song "Beautiful."

If you visit the central courtyard of the main mansion, adjacent to the pool, you'll discover the BistrôPlage, where you can enjoy a delightful breakfast and more, including lunches and dinners featuring organic ingredients. This is also a hub for art and music events that take place throughout the year. Parque Lage frequently hosts art parties, festivals, and music events on various weekends, often with the support of both private and public initiatives.

Notably, the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN) recognized the historical and cultural significance of Parque Lage for the city of Rio de Janeiro, officially listing it as a heritage site on June 14, 1957.
