The Country Office of Brazil supports efforts to achieve sustainable economic growth through increased competitiveness and productivity, with a government capable of efficiently providing public services for Brazilians, and it also addresses challenges related to gender and diversity.

Brazil’s country strategy for 2019-2022 is structured into four strategic areas:

(i) improve the business climate and narrow gaps in infrastructure for enhanced competitiveness;

(ii) promote national and international integration to boost productivity;

(iii) build a more effective public sector that promotes fiscal sustainability; and

(iv) reduce social inequality and lack of opportunities by enhancing public policy efficiency. As crosscutting issues, the strategy will address challenges related to: gender and diversity; environmental sustainability and climate change; and innovation and digital transformation.

Brazil is one of the founding member countries of the IDB. Like all the shareholders, Brazil appoints a Governor, who represents the country on the Board of Governors.

For day-to-day business at the Bank's Headquarters in Washington, D.C., Brazil is represented by a chair on the Board of Executive Directors. The chair, shared with Suriname, is headed by an Executive Director, who is elected to a three-year term by the Governors of Brazil and Suriname.

Country strategies remain valid for one year beyond the stated period, as they remain active throughout the preparation of the following strategy.
