While the image is extremely dark, when lightened, a clear version of Maul's facial marking pattern is revealed.
As Maul survived the last canonical events in Son of Dathomir, it appears possible that he is slated to appear in the upcoming episodes of Rebels.
Darth Maul was out to assassinate Queen Amidala on Naboo. In a ferocious battle, Maul killed Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn before being cut in half by young Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi. Maul endured the terrible wound and remained a shadowy force and rival of Darth Sidious for years afterward. Darth Maul's story has no canonical end and he remains at large in the post-Clone Wars galaxy.
Biography
Darth Maul is considered to be a male Dathomirian Zabrak, and lived during the waning years of the Galactic Republic. His mother, Talzin, gave him up at a young age to Darth Sidious because she wanted her son to escape the life of a Nightbrother. The Sith Lord trained Maul in the ways of the dark side of the Force.
Maul spent years training as an apprentice, while showing his strength and capabilities throughout his training.
Maul was finally unleashed on the Jedi in the first assassination attempt on Queen Amidala on the outskirts of Tatooine. Maul failed to reach his target due to an encounter with Qui-Gon Jinn. Maul then, famously, met his demise during his battle with both Jinn and Kenobi. He was cut in half, and his remaining upper body was dumped on the junk planet Lotho Minor.
Maul's mother Talzin was the only one who knew of his survival. Ten years after his encounter with Kenobi, Talzin tasked Maul's brother Opress with finding Maul, and gave him a special necklace in the process. Opress found Maul in a cave on Lotho Minor. Maul at first did not recognize Opress, but his memories soon began to recover after being presented with Talzin's necklace. Opress finally brought Maul back to his mother. Mother Talzin saved him using dark magicks - removing his psychosis, and giving him a more humanoid lower body.
Talzin disappeared before Maul could regain full consciousness, and quickly felt that the Force was out of balance. Opress informed Maul of the Clone Wars that had begun without him. Maul, disappointed, informed Opress that they both should set out on a quest for revenge against Kenobi.
Maul revealed himself to the Jedi Order after sending them a video transmission of him slaying a village filled with innocent civilians in Raydonia. Maul asked only for Kenobi to show up, and the Jedi Master did. At first Kenobi did not recognize, or remember Maul, but after the Sith expressed his hatred towards him, and reminded him that he killed Qui-Gon Jinn, Kenobi instantly remembered, shocked.
Both Maul and Opress dueled Kenobi, and the Jedi was outmatched. He was rescued by former Separatist lieutenant Asajj Ventress, who came of her own accord to collect the bounty on Opress' head. A fierce battle ensued between the four, until Ventress and Kenobi were eventually outmatched, and fled using the former's ship. Kenobi informed the Council of the brothers' existence, and they immediately went on a hunt for the two.
The two would square off with Kenobi and Jedi Adi Gallia. Gallia met her demise at the hands of Opress. The brothers would eventually escape, and both Palpatine and Yoda suggested that Kenobi should not further pursue them.
Maul and Opress began to further terrorize worlds whilst forming the Shadow Collective. The group eventually plotted to attack the New Mandalorian capital city of Sundari, but Death Watch swooped in and stopped them just in time. Death Watch arrested Maul and Opress, and imprisoned them in the Sundari prison. The brothers escaped and Maul challenged Death Watch leaderPre Vizsla to an honorable death match. Maul came out victorious, beheading Vizsla. This split Death Watch into two: The Nite Owls, who opposed Maul, and the other half who submitted to his reign.
Maul then learned from Almec that Duchess Satine Kryze was in trouble. Maul figured, knowing full well that Kenobi has feelings for her, Satine would be a perfect tool for revenge. Maul was able to slay Kenobi's lover during his last encounter with the Jedi.
Battling his old master Sidious with his brother Opress, Sidious killed Opress, and took Maul captive, torturing him using Force lightning. Maul was eventually rescued from incarceration by Death Watch. After further conflict with Separatist forces decimated Death Match, Maul appealed to Talzin for help. A final duel between Sidious, Talzin, and Maul took place on Dathomir, with Sidious's forces emerging triumphant. Mother Talzin sacrificed herself so Maul could escape.
Maul's whereabouts are now unknown. He met no canonical ending and might well have endured into the Rebellion era or even beyond. He remains an intriguing storytelling resource in the Star Wars universe.
