‘Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show’ Trailer: Carmichael Looks for Love, Sex, and Truth on HBO

Jerrod Carmichael is back on TV, but this time, it’s not NBC’s “The Jerrod Carmichael Show.” It’s the reality TV version of it.
Carmichael leads HBO docuseries “Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show,” billed as a “darkly funny documentary series about Jerrod’s tumultuous quest for love, sex, and truth.” The eight-episode series will debut weekly on HBO and will be available to stream on Max.
Directed by Ari Katcher, the series centers on the Emmy-winning comedian as he navigates his life living in New York City. Carmichael recently appeared in “Poor Things,” dropped comedy special “Rothaniel” on HBO in 2022, and served as the 2023 Golden Globes host. Carmichael made his feature directorial debut with “On the Count of Three,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2021.
Carmichael created and executive produced “Reality Show” along with director Katcher and Eli Despres, who both also executive produce in addition to Susie Fox and Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg for Edgeline Films. Maya Seidler produces for Edgeline Films.
The “Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show” will premiere at the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival March 10. The series is among IndieWire’s highly anticipated TV debuts at this year’s Austin festival, with the premieres of the Duplass Brothers’ “Penelope,” “Hacks” Season 3, “Star Trek: Discovery,” and docuseries “Magic City: An American Fantasy” and “Black Twitter” also on the lineup.
In 2022, Carmichael confirmed that the slated “48 Hours” remake hailing from the Safdie Brothers was shelved indefinitely. Carmichael was in talks to take on the role originally played by Eddie Murphy in the 1982 film. He was also at one point linked to a “Django Unchained” and “The Legend of Zorro” crossover film pitched by Quentin Tarantino. While Tarantino’s “The Movie Critic” is confirmed to be his tenth and final film, the auteur approached Carmichael years ago to act in and cowrote a “Django” spin-off.
“Quentin’s a lunatic who I love, and I’m happy that I got to spend the time. We saw exploitation flicks at the New Beverly, he read me scenes that never made it to his movies, that he had typed out, in his kitchen after making fresh-squeezed lemonade for me. It was really special,” Carmichael told GQ. “It’s actually an incredible, incredible script that came in from that Django/Zorro that I would love for Sony to figure out, but I realize the impossibility of it. But I still think we wrote a $500 million film.”
“Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show” premieres March 29 at 11 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will be available to stream on Max. Check out the trailer below.
