Mila Kunis Opens Up About Her Childhood Move to New York From Ukraine

Mila Kunis has opened up about her childhood move from Ukraine to the United States—and why she now hates pizza as a result.

The Black Swan actress, 39, was born in Chernivtsi, in western Ukraine. Her family left the country and moved to Los Angeles when Kunis was 7 years old.

However, during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the star discussed how when she and her family arrived in the U.S., it was through New York City.

This week, Jimmy Kimmel returned to his native city to host a week's worth of shows from the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

"I was born in Ukraine," Kunis said, beginning a story about her childhood, to rapturous applause.

Although the topic of the country's conflict with Russia was not discussed, Kunis acknowledged the current geopolitical situation and noted: "At least now people know where it is on the map."

The actress—who was on the show to promote her new movie, Luckiest Girl Alive—went on to tell a story about moving to the U.S. and how she tried her first burger and Coca-Cola when she arrived in New York as a child.

"When I came to the States I came through New York, except I think we were in Queens, put up in like a hotel to go through like your medical checks to make sure that you can be entered into the country really, but it's next to a cemetery," she said.

"What I recall is a cemetery across the street and this weird hotel that I was in but I did have a burger for the first time in New York and a Coca-Cola," she said.

Kimmel noted Kunis' "really great memory" before the New Yorker in him asked if she tried pizza for the first time then.

What ensued was Kunis being chastised by the New York audience for opinions on pizza, after she revealed that she now hates the food after her dad worked as a Domino's delivery driver when her family moved to Los Angeles.

"My dad delivered pizzas growing up, but in L.A., so I ate a lot—it's perfectly fine pizza guys," she told the audience who collectively booed over West Coast-styled pizza.

Kunis went on to say that because of her dad's job, her family ate pizza every day which resulted in her now hating it.

"I'll tell you I had it every day for a year, possibly more," she said adding that, ironically, her husband Ashton Kutcher bought her a pizza oven for their anniversary.

Earlier this year, both Kutcher and Kunis raised millions of dollars for relief in Ukraine.

"Today, I am a proud Ukrainian," Kunis wrote on the GoFundMe page. "While my family came to the United States in 1991, I was born in Chernivtsi, Ukraine, in 1983. Ukrainians are proud and brave people who deserve our help in their time of need."
