Guitar Hero®: Warriors of Rock

System: Wii Release date: 24/09/2010

Guitar know-it-alls use the term 'shredding' to refer to lightning fast solos in rock songs which make use of sweeping arpeggios, abuse of the whammy bar, legato and trills; all of which sound awesome on a track. Activision's Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock on Wii is a rock music-based rhythm-action game specially designed to bring out the shredder in you...

Featuring a massive on-disc set list of over 90 songs including hits from KISS, Slipknot, Queen, Megadeth and Black Sabbath there's a track to challenge anyone. While the tunes on the game disc have been selected to highlight hardcore guitar noodling you can play as any member of a band, be that rawk singer, kicking drummer, laid back bassist or superstar guitarist. Regardless of your role the gameplay is a doddle to pick up: if you're hogging the mic you sing along making sure to match your pitch to the melody line on the telly; drummers, guitarists and bass players just need to hit the coloured buttons on the controller in time with the rhythm of the coloured marks that come up on screen. If that sounds easy it's because it is - at least, to pick up and play, however mastering it is an entirely different story - but then that's all expected in a hard day's rock!

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock is the first game in the franchise to feature a Quest mode, the story of which is narrated by KISS front man Gene Simmons. Like those old metal album covers of yore, Quest mode will pull you into an awesome, over-the-top story: the Demigod of Rock has been imprisoned in stone by a terrible, soulless robot called the Beast. He calls out through time and space to heroes who have it in them to rock hard enough to set him free and save the music. You assume the role of beloved Guitar Hero characters (such as Axel Steel, Lars Ümlaüt and Pandora), but on this outing each character has their own special abilities which kick in when you unlock their 'Warrior' form: a physical reinvention that rocks even harder than usual. In some cases their powers allow you to rack up unbelievably massive scores, whereas others will save your bacon when times are tough and you need to practise a solo! You'll recruit other warriors as members of your band in a journey all the way from the now defunct punk venue of the CBGBs in New York to the fiery magma rivers of corrupted rock where you'll take on the Beast in a battle to save the music.

If you fancy a break from the epic story of the Quest the game also includes enhanced versions of modes from previous titles. Party Play makes an encore and still allows you to 'jump in' and 'drop out' as the mood takes you, whereas Quickplay+ offers 13 unique challenges for every single track on the disc (and for downloadable tracks too), completing which will earn you stars and unlock rocker customisations, characters and more. Don't forget: the game supports any combination of 4 instrument controllers so while you can bask in the limelight and widdle solo, 4 friends can play together in one local 'rehearsal space' or you and 7 other ostentatious rockers can kick it online via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection in a battle of the bands.

Even the Roadie modes have been expanded so 8 people can battle it out at once - allowing 4 Wii-based rockers to team up with a Nintendo DS roadie each - and this time around bassists or drummers can have roadies as well as guitarists! You can challenge other rockers while your hired help sabotages your opponents' efforts, your mate can act as set list manager to choose your next tune, or you and your roadie can work together to get the highest scores possible. Now that's team work.

Whichever way you shred it, there will be a rockening in your living room with Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock on Wii.

  • All new Quest Mode allows you to unlock the warrior within your favourite Guitar Hero characters on a quest to save the music.
  • Enhanced play modes give hours of replay value: Party Play means you can jump in and out, Quickplay+ gives you tons of challenges... why not see who rocks hardest locally or online via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection?
  • There's loads to do: with 90+ tracks on the disc, including an original track written specially for the game by Dave Mustaine from Megadeth, and more than 300 available to download from the shop.
  • Compatible with a new guitar controller which has all of the electronic wizardry in the neck and fretboard – so you can cutomise and mod to your heart's content.
