Local global pop artist Niki de Saint Phalle exhibition opens in Escondido
From outsider artist in her early days in France to doyenne of avant-garde monumental sculpture, the work of Niki de Saint Phalle, who spent the last years of her life living and working in San Diego County, is celebrated in an exhibition at the Center Museum at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. A public opening reception for “Niki de Saint Phalle: Mythical California” happens Friday, costs $10 and includes lite bites and no host bar. Also celebrated will be the 15-year anniversary of “Queen Califia’s Magical Circle,” the sculptural garden the artist constructed in Escondido’s Kit Carson Park. Upcoming related events include free family art lessons, a walking curator’s talk and film screening of “Who is the Monster,” profiling Niki and partner Jean Tinguely.
Exhibition opening and reception: Niki de Saint Phalle: Mythical California: 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 12; exhibition installed until March 4. California Center for the Arts, Escondido, 340 N. Escondido Blvd., Escondido. $10. (800) 988-4253 or artcenter.org/museum
