My eyes, my heart and soul are travelling with you to Nigeria where I enjoyed to be there. In Lagos and Kaduna I planted a tree and please give them water, and tell them to say: - Malangatana loves Nigeria!!!

World-renowned curator Bisi Silva visited Malangatana's studio in Mozambique multiple times, in particular in the year the current lot was painted (2008) in preparation for the travelling exhibition she was co-curating, 'Maputo: A tale of One City', which opened in Oslo in February 2009. The artist's mention of Lagos and Kaduna in his inscription refers to his participation at the second Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC), one of the greatest cultural events of the 20th century, which brought artists, musicians and writers from across Africa and its diaspora to Nigeria in 1977.
Proceeds from the sale of the present lot will benefit a new publication on Contemporary African Art, co-conceived by Silva before her passing and to be dedicated to her memory.
