Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves probably could’ve made it as a couple, but the actress confessed that she much prefers the multi-decade-long friendship they share instead.

Bullock spoked to Esquire as part of the magazine’s new cover story on Reeves, clarifying that, despite rumors to the contrary, she and the actor have never been anything more than platonic friends. When asked if they ever dated, she replied, “Nope. But who knows? Keanu’s a guy who, I feel like, is friends with every woman he’s ever dated. I don’t think there’s anyone who has something horrible to say about him. So maybe we could have survived. I don’t know.” Bullock and Reeves starred opposite one another in both 1994’s Speed and 2006’s The Lake House.

She added that she’s glad nothing romantic ever transpired because they’ve built a beautiful friendship together. “We didn’t have to survive anything,” she explained. “We just get to grow up together on parallel roads and tip our hats and meet for a dinner and try to work together. And the longer time goes on, the more in awe I am of the human being. Would I have been able to say that if he had dumped me and made me angry? Probably not.” When asked in the interview if he and Bullock will ever reunite on screen, Reeves stated, “I sure hope so.” He continued, “She’s such a wonderful artist and person. And, you know, I think we have good chemistry. And it would be really exciting and interesting to get the chance to perform with her again.”

Bullock also shared a personal anecdote about Reeves from about a year or two after Speed came out as evidence of the Matrix star’s undeniable charisma. The pair were hanging out and talking when the subject of champagne and truffles came up and the actress confessed that she’d never had either. A few days later, Bullock was hanging out with a friend in her new house when Reeves showed up outside with flowers, champagne, and truffles and said, “I just thought you might want to try champagne and truffles, to see what it’s like.” So they all opened the champagne and the truffles, Reeves sat down on the couch, “put his hands out, without a word, and Bullock painted his nails black, same as hers.”
