Earlier tonight, Kate Middleton stepped out in London wearing a brilliant red Marchesa Notte dress—a bold, eye-catching color that turned up again and again on the Fall 2017 runways and seems to have become one of her personal go-tos. Back in September, she stunned in a similarly hued Preen by Thornton Bregazzi gown and has often reworked the shade for daytime, from riding jackets and puffers to sleek suits. Tonight’s look, however, struck a new balance between fantasy and practicality by extending the color from head to toe.

Spotted at the Opening Night Royal Gala performance of 42nd Street, the Duchess's tea-length, cap-sleeved dress featured a delicate honeycomb pattern and balletic layers of tulle for heightened drama; a touch of sparkle came by way of a crystal beaded belt, while Kate Spade tassel earrings added whimsy. Wine-red stilettos effortlessly grounded the look—a case of color-matched dressing done right.
