COMMUNITY OF ACCEPTANCE 

At The Gathering Place we believe that 

each woman who comes through our 

doors is a valuable human being with a 

unique set of circumstances. We also 

believe that when a woman feels accepted 

and cared for she can collect her 

inner resources and make wise choices 

that will support her in rebuilding her life. 

Together, the women, staff, and volunteers 

of the Gathering Place cultivate a 

climate that is built on appreciating 

individual differences. In shaping our 

own community, we use each other’s 

unique gifts and lessons to form bonds 

of respect and friendship. 

Women are encouraged to develop 

individual strengths in an atmosphere 

of acceptance and support, with services 

designed to promote self-advocacy. 

As Denver’s only daytime drop-in center 

for women and children who are 

experiencing homelessness or poverty, 

The Gathering Place offers women and 

families essential tools for rebuilding 

their lives. 

SHELTER FROM HARM 

The Gathering Place is a safe haven for 

women and children during times of 

homelessness or poverty. 

A woman cannot concentrate on a search 

for housing if she is hungry. A woman 

will not be successful in gaining employment 

if she has no place to bathe or keep 

her clothing clean. The Gathering Place 

is a refuge that lets women and mothers 

address their families’ immediate needs 

so they can focus on the future. 

OPPORTUNITY FOR HOPE 

The welcoming and open environment 

of The Gathering Place promotes rest, 

rejuvenation, and consideration of future 

choices. Our programs are designed to 

foster the talent and potential within 

each woman. 

Women seeking support from The 

Gathering Place are encouraged to build 

a network of service providers that best 

fits their unique life circumstances. To 

help them accomplish this The Gathering 

Place has collaborative relationships with 

over 20 other organizations and agencies 

in the community. 

Most of this fiscal year was spent at our temporary location, Montview Boulevard 

Presbyterian Church. During our transition year we found that involvement in our 

self-sufficiency programs remained steady and that the numbers of women and children 

who just stopped in briefly for basic needs was much lower. We heard from 

women who had previously used our services that the transportation costs and distance 

created difficulties. For us, this re-affirmed our decision that the best location 

choice for The Gathering Place is 1535 High Street and as the year closed, we were 

able to move into our brand new facility. Some highlights of our accomplishments 

and activities include: 

EMERGENCY SERVICES 

Women and children made a total of 

23,112 visits to The Gathering Place in 

2007 by 7,452 individual women and children, 

averaging 1,926 visits each month. 

A total of 276 nights-off-the-streets were 

provided through motel vouchers during 

the year. 

Lack of affordable and reliable transportation 

is a barrier for people who are 

seeking employment, education, training 

or housing. The Gathering Place distributed 

an average of 2,101 bus fares to 

women and their children each month. 

FOOD PROGRAM 

The buffet breakfast, full-service hot 

lunches and hearty afternoon snacks 

helped women and their children to save 

precious cash resources they could apply 

towards rent or utility expenses. Eating 

meals at The Gathering Place also provides 

a community of support where 

people visit, share experiences and 

encourage one another. The Gathering 

Place served 38,820 meals in 2007, for 

an average of 3,235 meals each month. 

In addition, through Betsy’s Cupboard, 

our emergency food and supply bank 

we supported an average of 204 families 

with food and toiletry baskets as well as 

baby supplies each month.

FAMILY AREA 

In the Family Area, staff and volunteers 

provide a safe and nurturing environment 

for children visiting The Gathering Place 

with their mothers. Each month an average 

of 354 children visited the Family 

Area at The Gathering Place to do the 

real work of childhood — play. We continue 

to give the families access to over-thecounter 

medications which cannot be purchased 

with food stamps. 

PHYSICAL & MENTAL 

HEALTH PROGRAM 

People experiencing homelessness often 

have chronic physical or mental health 

challenges that can be barriers to employment 

or stable housing. The Mental 

Health Center of Denver and Mental 

Health America of Colorado provided 

672 counseling sessions on-site at The 

Gathering Place in 2007. The Stout Street 

Clinic mobile van provided 312 medical 

exams at no cost to the women. 

PERSONAL GROWTH 

& LEARNING PROGRAMS 

The Gathering Place actively collaborates 

with private and public organizations 

across the community to provide an array 

of programs that women can select from 

to begin rebuilding their lives. Many of 

the successes experienced below are a 

result of these collaborations. 

Attorneys provided by Qwest 

Communications offered 120 free legal 

inquiry sessions to the women we serve, 

often eliminating outstanding judgments 

that barred women from employment 

or housing. 

In 2007, we initiated new collaborative 

relationships for arts and crafts activities, 

and we offered African Dance classes 

through a collaboration with Park Hill 

Thriving Communities. 

Bridget’s Boutique provided high-quality 

clothing to 1,056 women through the 

Hand Me Up donation program of 

Heritage Cleaners and donations of new 

clothing through businesses such as J.Jill. 

Additionally, SOL Lingerie fitted women 

for new and gently-used bras. 

Through the year, 168 free haircuts were 

given to women and children. 

HOUSING STABILIZATION 

With funding from Denver’s Road Home, 

The Gathering Place initiated a Housing 

Stabilization Program in 2006. This program 

assisted 23 homeless women find 

housing within the first year by providing 

case management, rental assistance, utility 

assistance, furniture, help obtaining legal 

identification, transportation assistance, 

and access to homeless court to clear up 

outstanding legal issues. The Gathering 

Place Association provided “Welcome 

Home” gift baskets to all the women in 

the program, which contained necessary 

housekeeping supplies. 

ARTS PROGRAMS 

At The Gathering Place, we believe in 

the power of creativity to heal and rest 

the mind. The Card Project provides a 

safe and supportive environment for 

women to express themselves artistically 

and an opportunity to experience growth 

and obtain financial reward. Card Project 

artists collectively earned $30,720 through 

the sale of individually hand-made greeting 

cards in 2007. 

A new knitting group was formed and an 

average of 16 women per month participated 

in the group. 

Art classes were offered through The 

Other Side Arts and were attended by an 

average of 14 women per month. 

CELEBRATIONS 

The Gathering Place works hard to make 

the holidays special for the women and 

children we serve. 

In December, over three hundred individuals 

enjoyed a spectacular Holiday 

Fair coordinated by The Gathering Place 

Association. The annual Holiday Fair 

includes a holiday meal, a visit from 

Santa, games, crafts and entertainment. 

Each family member received a $25 gift 

certificate and bus tokens to shop for their 

loved ones at the holidays. Every person 

also received warm hats, scarves and 

gloves provided by the Smartwool 

Corporation. In addition to the Holiday 

Fair, The Gathering Place held Santa’s 

Toy Shop, where new toys and gift cards 

were distributed to families. 

In February, the Denver Links women’s 

club hosted a Black History Dinner for 

The Gathering Place community, which 

included dancing and singing entertainment, 

as well as a delicious home cooked 

meal. Forty-five women attended the 

event and viewed a powerful documentary 

on the life of Rosa Parks. 

In September, The Gathering Place held 

a street fair in celebration of the new facility. 

Over 500 women and children, staff, 

donors, volunteers and friends attended 

the event. Denver Mayor Hickenlooper 

and others were on hand for the Ribbon- 

Cutting ceremony.

Dear Friends, 

At last we are home. The past fiscal year brought numerous challenges as we completed the construction of our new facility and then 

in late August, we said good-bye to our friends at Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church, and we moved back home to High 

Street. And what a lovely home it is. 

Most days I approach the new building from the north and most days I am fortunate enough to stop at the red light on Colfax and 

High Street where I have a view of a beautiful new building complete with a proud sign that includes our logo, our name and “The 

Kal and Joyce Zeff Center.” And with that, I start my day with pride. Together and with your support, we have created something 

magnificent and something so beyond a building. We have created the space to fulfill our dreams. 

Each day somewhere between 200 and 300 women and children come to visit us and to receive services. In our new building, they 

spend considerably less time waiting in lines to sign in and sign up and considerably more time rebuilding their lives. The design 

promotes safety and a sense of community. There are places for privacy, places for relationships; small groups and large groups can 

be accommodated. There is more of everything – more showers, more washers and dryers, more computers, more classroom time, 

more room for art, for exercise and for personal services like haircuts and clothing. There is more time for staff and volunteers to 

spend with the women and more time for the women to help themselves and help each other. These were all things that we dreamed 

about and now they have become reality. Completing the building has become a very important beginning for our organization. 

No longer limited by space, we are at last free to create new programs and services that meet the needs of the women and children. 

We are committed to evaluating our performance along the way and making changes when needed to ensure that we are relevant 

and producing results. With our knowledge and expertise, we are an important voice for women and children experiencing homelessness 

and we envision ourselves as leaders and advocates in this area. Our vision is to help the women and children we serve 

rebuild their lives and to contribute to improving life for all of us in the Denver metropolitan area.

Dear Friends, 

Last month, I arrived at The Gathering Place one Thursday afternoon to meet with clients to discuss their legal issues, much as I 

have been doing for the past 20 years. This time though, something was very different: we met in an office, with a door and a computer. 

This may not sound like much, but to the women (and to me) this was huge. Due to the space constraints of the old building, 

we had gotten used to meeting wherever we could find some room — in a corner of the dining room, in the laundry room, in the 

children’s area, and once — in the bathroom. At least the bathroom was private. Discussing their legal issues in a public setting did 

not seem to faze most of the women. Loss of privacy and dignity goes hand-in-hand with poverty and homelessness. 

I was unprepared for the magnitude of the difference a small thing like an office and computer would make. I found that I spent at 

least twice as much time with each client as I had previously. The women were much more open and focused in a private setting. 

There were no interruptions or distractions. No one was coming in to use the washer and overhearing our conversation. In the past, 

I would often have to tell clients I would get back to them after I’d gone back to my office to research their issue or print a form. Of 

course, since many of the women at The Gathering Place do not have regular access to a phone or voice mail, follow-up was extremely 

difficult and often never happened. With a computer on the desk, I was able to immediately direct the women to resources, help 

them prepare legal documents, and get them answers to their questions on the spot. 

My experience is only one small example of the tremendous positive change The Kal and Joyce Zeff Center has brought to the 

women and children of The Gathering Place. The Gathering Place has always been a place that provides community and acceptance 

for the women and children it serves. Now, however, it also provides dignity, peace and beauty. In a way that words never could, the 

new building shows the women and children of The Gathering Place that you care and believe they are valuable and valued members 

of the community.

The Gathering Place Association was formed as a membership group in 1990 with the mission of supporting the programs and 

operations of The Gathering Place. Over the years, this group of dedicated and creative women has generated well over $2 million 

through membership events, donation drives and, most notably, the annual Brown Bag Benefit. We are pleased to share some of the 

highlights of their activities this year. 

WOMEN’S BUNKO PARTY 

The Fourth Annual Women’s Bunko Party chaired by Rae Lapporte and Kelly Hyer was a great success! On June 7th, over 160 

women gathered at The DU Cable Center for Bunko & Bags. Handbag prizes were awarded, guests enjoyed a beautiful dessert 

buffet and signature cocktails having a great time meeting new friends and learning more about The Gathering Place. Players 

brought toiletries and school supplies to help replenish Betsy’s Cupboard and The Gathering Place Cards were also sold, providing 

the opportunity to earn an income for women at The Gathering Place. 

FALL MEMBERSHIP COFFEES 

Dee Dee Parker hosted two events for new members and returning members to meet each other. During both coffees, members 

had the opportunity to hear from two of the women who rely on The Gathering Place as a source of refuge and hope. 

HOLIDAY FAIR 

Each year, The Gathering Place Association hosts a special holiday party for the women and kids of The Gathering Place. This joyful 

event meets the need for community and sharing of the holiday spirit for several hundred families who would not otherwise have 

such an opportunity. Association members give generously of their resources and talents in baking cookies, teaching simple craft 

activities, donating gift cards and serving meals to the women and kids. 

SPRING MEMBERSHIP MEETING 

Hats off to Martha Kallestad and Mary Kirkpatrick who co-chaired the Spring Members Luncheon at the Phipps Mansion. The guest 

speaker was Governing Board member Erin Toll. As Director of the Colorado Division of Real Estate, Erin serves us all as she 

ensures that real estate businesses in Colorado are of the highest quality. 

17TH ANNUAL BROWN BAG BENEFIT — AN EVENING IN THE TROPICS 

On May 19, the DTC Hyatt was turned into a tropical paradise, where the 20th anniversary of The Gathering Place was celebrated. 

Heidi and Randy Keogh were honored for their years of support and work in furthering The Gathering Place mission in the community. 

Event chairman, Dee Dee Parker, assembled a stellar team that created an unforgettable celebration and raised a record-breaking 

$260,000 for the operating fund of The Gathering Place.

Volunteer groups and individuals help to serve lunch daily so that women and children 

can spend their lunch time enjoying each other's company as well as the meal. School 

groups often schedule tours of The Gathering Place as part of their community education 

programs. 

The role of volunteers is fundamental to 

the mission of The Gathering Place. 

They do simple but immeasurably 

important things: They talk to the 

women. They listen to them. They treat 

them with respect. 

The Gathering Place fosters an environment 

in which community volunteers 

and staff collaborate to support 

women and children experiencing 

homelessness and poverty. In 2007, 

volunteers worked in every aspect of 

our programs and operations, contributing 

13,936 hours of service. 

The time given by volunteers in 2007 is 

equal to a resource value of approximately 

$276,751 and the equivalent of about 

seven full-time staff members. Without 

dedicated community volunteers, we 

simply would not be able to provide the 

supportive and caring services women 

and children need to rebuild their lives. 

We are very grateful to all those in the 

community who choose to serve as a 

source of hope and provide a context for 

the restoration of the human spirit when 

hope has been lost. The Gathering Place
