Yoel Romero suspended 6 months after USADA confirmation of tainted supplement

Yoel Romero has been handed a six-month suspension by USADA after failing a drug test after his UFC 194 split decision win over Ronaldo Souza.

USADA announced Romero (11-1 MMA, 7-0 UFC), ranked No. 3 in the MMAjunkie/USA TODAY Sports MMA middleweight rankings, accepted their sanction via a statement on their official website.

Romero, a 2000 Olympic silver-medal wrestler for Cuba, has won seven straight fights – all in the UFC – and was knocking on the door of a potential title fight after the victory at UFC 194.

Following USADA’s notification that he had tested positive for the banned substance Ibutamoren, Romero’s manager, Malki Kawa, claimed the failure was the result of a tainted supplement.

USADA confirmed that the supplement was provided to them and they were able to confirm the presence of Ibutamoren – which was not listed as an ingredient.

From USADA’s statement:

“Romero’s period of ineligibility began on January 12, 2016, the date on which he was provisionally suspended from competition. Because USADA was able to confirm, based on a negative fight night test result, that Romero’s use of the contaminated supplement began after he competed at UFC 194 on December 12, 2015, his competitive results from that event were not disqualified.

‘This case clearly demonstrates some of the dangers inherent to supplement use,’ said USADA’s Special Advisor on Drugs and Supplements, Dr. Amy Eichner. ‘When considering whether to incorporate supplements into a training plan, it is vitally important that athletes exercise the upmost care in order to avoid making a decision that could endanger their eligibility, reputation or general health and wellness.’

Romero does not have a fight scheduled but will be able to compete as of July 12.
