(Cl. 128-287) This invention relates to certain new and useful structural and functional improvements in diapers which, conjointly considered, have as a principal object of the invention to provide a diaper which is form-fitting, comfortable, easily applicable and removable and which when worn will have the outside appearance of a dry diaper although it maybe in need of changing.

Another object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and economical diaper of three part construction which embodies full and reliable .absorbent properties and provided with inwardly turned partially overlapping flaps or inside front and rear sections constituting additional padding and hence increased absorbency in the intermediate area of the diaper.

A further object is to provide a diaper which will hold its shape and capable of withstanding mechanical washing and drying.

The foregoing and other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof and in which:

FIGURE 1 is a top plan view, or what might be called an interior or inside view of a diaper made in accordance with my invention and spread out fiatwise illustrating the parts thereof and their shape and arrangement.

FIGURE 2 is a perspective view on an enlarged scale of the diaper showing the manner in which the component or parts of the diaper cooperate when applied to an infant.

FIGURE 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view on an enlarged scale of FIGURE 1, and

FIGURE 4 is a view similar to FIGURE 1 on a reduced scale illustrating a modified form of the invention.

With continuing reference to the drawing wherein like references of character designate like parts reference numeral 1 indicates generally the main outer part of the diaper which comprises a single sheet of appropriate diaper material diverging outwardly in two directions from a transverse center line C into front and rear outside trapezoidal sections 2 and 3 and extending therebeyond into adjacent trapezoidal sections which are folded back on themselves respectively along fold lines 4 and 5 to provide two identical inside sections 6 and 7 convergingly matching the divergence of the front and rear outside sections 2 and 3, but extending across the transverse center line into two equally overlapping center sections 8 and 9 also of trapezoidal form and wherein the common long side of both is defined by said center line.

Secured between the front and rear outside sections 2 and 3 and the front and rear inside sections 6 and 7 is a sheet of rubberized material 10 and 11 pinked around its edges as at 12 and 13 and secured to its respective sections as by stitching 14 and 15 along its sides and across its inner edges andv by double rows of

stitching

16 and 17 across its outer ends.

The front marginal edge of the front outside and inside sections are provided with snap fasteners 18 cooperating with companion fasteners 19 secured to the corresponding rearward marginal edge of the outside and inside sections 3 and 7.

The edges of the center section of the main outer part 1 of the diaper, in the area of the transverse center line C are cut on a curve indicated at 22 to provide extra diaper material which because of its soft texture, will protect an infants legs from any chafing or scratching action of the pinked edge of the rubberized material.

In the modified form of the invention shown in FIG- URE 4 a transverse cut 25 is made through the rear inside section 7A and through the underlying rubberized sheet for the insertion therethrough of the end of the center section 8A to overlap the underlying center section 9A to thus provide a smoother overall central area and to prevent wrinkling or creasing when applying the diaper to the infant.

Although I have shown the outer part 1 and front and rear. Here, as in FIGURE 1, it will be noted that the overlap of 8A relative to 9A is equal. Inside sections 6 and 7 as made of single thickness, it will be readily understood that two or more thicknesses may be utilized if desired.

In applying the diaper to the wearer, the diaper is spread out flatwise as shown in FIGURE 1 and the infant placed with its buttocks resting upon the inside section 7 and a part of the overlapping central section 8. The front section 6 is then pulled upwardly to overlie and extend partly around the abdominal region of the body as shown in FIGURE 2. The rear corners of the rear section 7 are then pulled upwardly to overlap the corresponding portions of the front section 2 so that the

18 and 19 may be interengaged to hold the diaper in place.

While I have shown particular forms of embodiment of my invention, I am aware that many minor changes therein will readily suggest themselves to others skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. A diaper comprising a single sheet of absorbent diaper material diverging equally outward in two directions from a transverse center line into trapezoidal front and rear outer sections and extending therebeyond into adjacent trapezoidal front and rear inner sections folded back along their respective lines of adjacency onto said front and rear outer sections, said front and rear inner sections of greater length than the front and rear outer sections and extending across said center line into two overlapping identical central sections of equal area, a single sheet of water-repellent material secured respectively between said front and rear outer sections and between said front and rear inner sections, and the area of mergence of said front and rear outer sections being on a radius of curvature to provide extended protective margins of diaper material at the intersection of the sides of said trapezoidal form sections, and whereby to provide additional padding and hence increased absorbency across the central area of the diaper.

2. A diaper comprising a single sheet of absorbent diaper material diverging equally outward in two directions from a transverse center line into trapezoidal front and rear outer sections and extending therebeyond into adjacent trapezoidal front and rear inner sections folded back along their respective lines of adjacency onto said front and rear outer sections, said front and rear inner sections of greater length than the front and rear outer sections and extending across said center line into two overlapping identical central sections each of trapezoidal form wherein the common long side of both is defined by said center line, a single sheet of water-repellent material secured respectively between said front and rear sections and said front and rear inside sections, the area of mergence of said front and rear outer sections being on a radius of curvature to provide extended protective margins of diaper material at the intersections of the sides of said trapezoidal form sections, said rear inside and outer sections and said water-repellent material therebetween having a transverse cut therethrough for the in sertion of the inner end portion of said inside and outside front section and the Water-repellent material therebetween to thereby provide a smooth overall central area to prevent wrinkling or creasing when applying the diaper to an infant and whereby additional padding and hence increased absorbency is provided across the central area of the diaper.

1. A DIAPER COMPRISING A SINGLE SHEET OF ABSORBENT DIAPER MATERIAL DIVERGING EQUALLY OUTWARD IN TWO DIRECTIONS FROM A TRANSVERSE CENTER LINE INTO TRAPEZOIDAL FRONT AND REAR OUTER SECTIONS AND EXTENDING THEREBEYOND INTO ADJACENT TRAPEZOIDAL FRONT AND REAR INNER SECTIONS FOLDED BACK ALONG THEIR RESPECTIVE LINES OF ADJACENCY ONTO SAID FRONT AND REAR OUTER SECTIONS, SAID FRONT AND REAR INNER SECTIONS OF GREATER LENGTH THAN THE FRONT AND REAR OUTER SECTIONS AND EXTENDING ACROSS SAID CENTER LINE INTO TWO OVERLAPPING IDENTICAL CENTRAL SECTIONS OF EQUAL AREA, A SINGLE SHEET OF WATER-REPELLENT MATERIAL SECURED RESPEC-
