There are some incredible moments and reveals in this volume. I'm still a little disappointed with the way it handles some big mysteries. Specifically when it introduces something, and a second later reveals it to the reader with little interest. It's happened a couple of times.

Besides that though I loved this volume. Armstrong, Winry and Scar, Hawkeye and Mustang...

This Volume probably has one of my favorite gags. The humor is really well done.

A very good volume indeed.

Winry's back, and I don't think I mentioned this before but I really like the fact that the best mechanic out there is a girl. She knows what she's doing, that one, and she's no wallflower or a damsel in distress. The way Arakawa showcases all those relationships, the love and friendship and loyalty within the grand found family gathered around Elric brothers, is truly heartfelt and precious. Of course, what makes it so cool is that what unites them are not Elric brothers per se but the values they are standing for.

The action is flowing fast here, with highly enjoyable twists and turns. Finally it's becoming obvious that the end is in sight. Avanti!

We’re now fully back in the swing of things and this was my favorite volume yet. THIS is what I love about comics and manga, they can just build and evolve in a special way that prose novels don’t and we’re getting full fledged layers of chaotic awesomeness here! Thus ends the middle third of this story too, onward to the final third!

This is a review of the entire series.

Fullmetal Alchemist takes place in the fictional country of Amestris which is heavily based on the Industrial Revolution. Amestris is a unitary state under the rule of a parliamentary republic, run by state alchemists that serve the king utilizing the mystifying arts of alchemy. Alchemy is the power to alter the physical world utilizing its natural elements, performing magic and miracles in the form of science. Alchemy follows the law of equivalent exchange, you must sacrifice something that is of equal value to what you create. You must sacrifice a life to create a life, you must extinguish one flame to ignite another, you have to sacrifice one home to build another, etc...

After being abandoned by their father as children and subjected to watching their mother die, Edward Elric and his brother Alphonse once attempted to utilize the power of alchemy to bring their mother back from the grave, ignoring the dangers of creating a life by offering something of equal value. Edward loses an arm and a leg while Alphonse loses his entire body; his soul placed in a hollow suit of armor that can't feel the touch of others. As neither of them sacrificed their lives in their entirety, the exchange failed and the boys created an abomination in place of their dead mother.

After burning their own home down and dealing with the abomination they created, Edward and his brother enlist themselves in the military to atone for their sins and learn more about the many secrets of alchemy; potentially learning how to recover their original bodies in the process. While serving in the military, the brothers begin to realize how the wonders of alchemy can be abused for nefarious purposes. Immortal life can be gained by sacrificing hundreds of innocents souls, wars can be staged and foreign nations can be annihilated under false charges, human experimentation aided by alchemy can lead to unnatural mutations, the world of alchemy is more dark and dangerous than either of them could've bargained for.

Fullmetal Alchemist grew on me the longer I read it. When I first started reading, it seemed like it was going to be generic shounen material, but it gets deeper and darker the further it goes on. The way it handles political and religious corruption, the dangers of advanced states abusing their technology and resources at the expense of foreign nations caught in the turmoil, and the sad futility of revenge are all very well done.

The characters all bear the weight of what alchemy is capable of. Edward and Alphonse carry the burden of abusing alchemy for selfish purposes. Their master Izumi loses her womb after attempting to resurrect her dead child. Scar takes many lives after his entire country is desecrated and gets trapped in a pointless cycle of revenge. Roy and Riza endure the regret of committing brutal war crimes for the sake of protecting their own nation. Alchemy creates and destroys in equal measure and no one is free from the consequences of tipping the balance.

The fight scenes are flashy and exciting without being too over-the-top because of the dangerous limitations that alchemy involves. The law of equivalent exchange keeps the power scaling in check and adds plenty of tension to the action. The female characters are especially well done, all of them are strong and unique in their own way. The lead heroine Winry being a skilled mechanic, Riza being an honorable warrior of the military, Olivier Armstrong as cold and vicious as the snowy fortress she guards, and that's just a few of them.

The villains are an interesting parody of the seven deadly sins. Each of them represent the darkness and regrets of each of the main characters and they can only be conquered by coming to terms with their own flaws and sins. The characters having to overcome their personal demons to take on the greater demons trying to overthrow the world from the shadows made the struggles of every single person in the story feel personal. Every character, no matter how minor had their moments to shine. Everyone had a vital role to play and the camaraderie between friend and foe alike never felt cheesy or forced.

Unlike most shounen series I've read, the final arc was my favorite. A lot of long-running shounen series have a habit of being dragged out, losing touch with what made them great or breaking their own rules in messy, plot-hole-filled final arcs that leave a lot to be desired. Fullmetal Alchemist has no lose ends, all characters have complete arcs where they learn and grow from their dark pasts, the romance and comedy are handled well without relying on cheap fanservice, the action scenes are great but they don't overshadow the plot and the final chapters tie everything together beautifully. It's not my favorite manga by any means as I usually tend to favor seinen, but it's definitely one of the greatest stories to ever come out of the shounen demographic in my opinion. The ending is a tearjerker but it left me in good spirits.

Andiamo in ordine rigorosamente sparso:
- la vera identità di Selim Bradley, il figlio adottivo del big boss, aka Pride, il primo homunculus creato dal Padre. Trovandosi in sua presenza, Riza non ha dubbi sulla sua vera natura. E adesso dovrà guardarsi le spalle (notare come Roy capisca subito, addirittura via telefono, che c'è qualcosa che la turba);
- i primi contatti per unire le capacità difensive delle truppe del Nord con le ottime doti offensive di quelle dell'Est (e Roy finisce per doversi comprare un intero carico di fiori per avere queste informazioni);
- a proposito di Nord, lì sta succedendo un bel casino, visto che l'intruso che ha scavato un tunnel nei sotterranei della fortezza altri non è che Sloth, altro homunculus. E da lì, Ed e compagnia iniziano a tirare delle conclusioni quantomeno inquietanti su Amestris e sullo scopo della sua fondazione. Infatti, unendo i punti indicanti località in cui si sono svolti atti di grande violenza si ottiene un cerchio alchemico. Ma non solo. Si capisce pure che i piani alti dell'esercito sono a conoscenza di tutto, anzi che hanno organizzato tutto. Amestris è stata creata per poter permettere un enorme sacrificio umano. Bene ma non benissimo;
- la sorella del maggiore Armstrong è un idolo, visto che riesce a farsi raccontare tutto da uno di questi parrucconi dell'esercito, il generale Raven - i prescelti, coloro che rimarranno fedeli, riceveranno presto il dono dell'immortalità; chi rifiuta o crea problemi, verrà eliminato. Peccato solo che sarà lui a fare una brutta fine. Godopoli;
- l'alchemista cremisi è di nuovo in giro, alle dirette dipendenze di Bradley. Visto che il comandante supremo non apprezza molto la presenza dei fratelli Elric nella fortezza di Briggs, decide di ricordare loro che non gli conviene creare problemi: la vita di Winry è nelle sue mani. Ergo, i due faranno meglio ad eseguire gli ordini. Il punto è che Ed e Alphonse non sono bravi a prendere ordini, e così si ritroveranno faccia a faccia con Scar, ma non hanno alcuna intenzione di consegnarlo a quel viscido di Kimbly. Chissà che succederà;
- l'incontro tra Winry e Scar è stato un momento particolarmente interessante, visto che la ragazza, proprio come i suoi defunti genitori, detesta sprecare vite umane. Non può perdonare, però non desidera nemmeno la morte dell'uomo che l'ha resa orfana - il gesto di un uomo in preda a un dolore estremo che se l'è presa con due innocenti che per lui incarnavano la figura del nemico;

Prossima fermata, volume 13!

As we delve deeper into my favorite arc of the entirety of FMA, the plot picks up quite a bit, and the intensity keeps going up. Ed and Al must learn how to trust in order to find new important allies in the North, mainly because of the army’s men getting closer and even more dangerous than before. Cards are on the table, and the threat that their failure would bring is clearly exposed. Basically: the stakes are high. Which makes it impossible to stop turning the pages.

Even as the plot picks up, the characterisation never stops, as we witness key moments for some characters, for example Winry. In this volume, she clearly shows why shes one of the best people in this story, and I’m honestly so in love with her. I do love her relationship with Ed as well, as they’re both now aware of their own feelings, and seeing them interact with each other was absolutely hilarious.

I do love the way this story handles making mistakes and forgiving for them. I find this absolutely insane how no character (beside like… Kimblee and Father) is completely evil. They’re all so full of flaws, but at the same time so human. And the way some are so good that they’re ready to forgive and offer them the help they need. Honestly, I don’t think I ever read a manga or story which handled it as well as FMA does.

Most important scene for me, we get a bit of a glimpse into Hohenheim’s mind, and what pushed him to abandon the love of his life and his children all those years ago. And despite knowing and having watched the anime multiple times, it always breaks my heart. He’s honestly the character that makes me cry the most (and by far), and he shows some of the best writing I’ve seen in years.

I’m not ready for the next volumes to come, but I also can’t wait to pick them up and devour them.

Haaaahhh, endingnyaaaaa.... 😰😀

After the discover of the homunculus Sloth, Ed and Al are imprisoned in the jail of the harsh northern command post, Fort Briggs. Major General Armstrong wrests the whole story from Ed, and agrees to become an accessory in the plot to stop the homunculus takeover of the country. This includes prying as much information out of Lt General Raven and Kimblee, the Crimson Lotus Alchemist, both of whom have come to the Northern Reaches to hunt Scar. Ed finally works out the meaning behind all of the deadly skirmishes that have broken out through the history of Amestris, and he finally understand what Hughes worked out all those months ago. Führer Bradley arranges for Winry to come to the Fort under the pretense of fitting Ed with winter auto mail, but Ed and Al know it’s to further flaunt the power Bradley has over their lives. Together with the Crimson Lotus Alchemist, Ed, Al, and several Briggs and Central soldiers continue the manhunt for Scar, but the brothers have more plans to continue their defiance of Central Command.

Ed and Al’s time in the Northern reaches of Amestris turn out to be a lot more eventful than they probably originally thought. Major General Armstrong is the complete opposite of her brother, but her men are fiercely loyal and carry out her every order with little questioning, including those she issues as part of the deception with Raven and Kimblee. Ed figuring out the homunculus master plan is a major turning point in this storyline, and things get really interesting and even more complicated from here on out.

jilid lainnya yg sangat sangat menghibur!!

Winry continues to be the very best. God, her interactions with Scar are so moving, and she's just so good. I love her. Also, I love Scar's entire story, because his rage is so understandable, and I love that Arakawa continues with the theme of forgiveness v restitution and what is more valuable.
